Placenta in the wrong place

Does anyone else have this issue? I have to go back for another ultrasound in a month. Dr said
Not to worry unless there is bleeding. Of course, I'm still worried.

Re: Placenta in the wrong place

  • Are you talking about placenta previa?  I would just heed your dr.'s advice.  Placenta's tend to move up towards the 3rd trimester clearing the cervix.  If not, worst case scenario, you go on bed rest and need a c-section.  I would not worry at this point.

I had a ultrasound 3 1/2 weeks ago. They didn't like how low my placenta was and placed me on limited activity. I was super worried that anything I did would cause an issue (ftm so I'm worried about everything :).) I go back on Tuesday for another ultrasound. I'm less worried now then I was when I first found out. I understand how you feel.

ETA: I don't have placenta previa, just a low placenta.

  • I have this going on - placenta previa. I have to go back for a follow up u/s in November to see if it has moved on it's own. Most do from what OB said.

  • My placenta was completely covering the cervical opening at my 19 week scan. Have to go back Dec. 1 for another u/s. If it hasn't moved by then , I have to have an u/s every four weeks. If it doesn't move, then it's a C-section. Nothing to worry about, just something to watch.

With Baby #1 my placenta was partially blocking the cervix at the 20 week scan and it moved on its own and I had a natural childbirth.

    I wouldn't worry too much.

  • OP, Like, your placenta is...
    -On vacation?
    -Touring your liver?
    -already getting encapsulated?

There are so many wrong places for it to be. I think it needs a time out.

Tip your waitress, try the veal. Ladies I'm here alllllll night.

Seriously though you need to clarify with your doctor if it's over your cervix or just low. If they think it is a complete previa it is not moving in most cases unfortunately and that usually sends people to c-section. That's why they even look. It can affect mode of delivery.

Bonus points to you, OP, if when you ask for clarification you tell the doctor something's wrong "down there" or with your "peepee" and motion in general towards your pelvis! ;)

  • I found out at my anatomy scan yesterday that I have a complete placenta previa.  The Dr didn't seem too worried about it at this point.  It is covering the opening of the cervix entirely, but it is only the edge of the placenta covering the cervix.  She said there is plenty of time for the uterus to expand & the placenta to move upward.  I'll go back at 32 weeks for an ultrasound check.

  • Thanks for all the replies, definitely helps to know I'm not alone! I had such a short conversation with the nurse on my break I didn't get many details. They said they wanted a second look anyways because they need a better look at the left side of the heart because of the way the baby was positioned.
  • My OB said mine was in the front (I have no idea what that means) but that even if it were covering the cervix it wouldn't matter because there's plenty of time for it to move.

  • For my friends that like to be exact here are the numbers:

"In one series of 714 placenta previas in singleton gestations with a liveborn infant ≥25 weeks of gestation, the previa was present at delivery in 12 percent of those identified at 15 to 19 weeks, 34 percent of those identified at 20 to 23 weeks, 49 percent of those identified at 24 to 27 weeks, 62 percent of those identified at 28 to 31 weeks, and 73 percent of those identified at 32 to 35 weeks".

So we could make a graph about it but pretty much the longer it's there the more likely it ain't changing.

  • And @animalcrckr‌ there is no evidence for benefit of bedrest...only risks.

Doctors shouldn't recommend this unless you're actively bleeding.

Paper is 9/2/14, journal of maternal-fetal medicine. Google it for fun :)

  • If you were to have a bleed, I just want to prepare you a little. I wish I had been more prepared. I was diagnosed with a partial previa at 20 weeks with DD. At 28 weeks, it was 'marginal.' I was told pelvic rest, and to 'let the doctor know' if I had bleeding. No one told me what that bleeding could be like. The day after my 28 week ultrasound, I had my first bleed. It happened in the middle of the night, and it was so much, I thought my water had broken until I went to the bathroom. DH was working, and I was terrified. He came home right away, and we went to the hospital. I was admitted, and stayed there for 3 days and had more bleeding. It looked like I was going to be in the hospital for the duration of the pregnancy. Thank goodness I was able to go home on bedrest. I had seven more trips due to bleeding, despite the fact I was told that the previa resolved at 34 weeks.

I delivered a healthy baby girl at 37 weeks by emergency c section. I was allowed to labor, because according to all of my tests, the previa was resolved. But, I had a massive bleed the day she was born, and so the c section was done. They pulled her out, and the tests were indeed wrong, I still had a significant previa.

Now, I am higher risk for another previa this pregnancy. I currently have a marginal previa, and have been told it will move for sure. I unfortunately have already had a significant bleed at 15 weeks, so much earlier than my last pregnancy.

I'm sorry if this sounds scary, but previas shouldn't be taken lightly, and I wish I knew what was possible last time. Now, my problem is, I have no faith in the countless ultrasounds I have had.

FX yours resolves, and no one has the scare of bleeds, and that we all have happy healthy pregnancies!

  • Sorry to hear about your situation @umbcpt. T&P to you.

Previas can be serious and as you see from the numbers a significant portion don't completely resolve.

I have not looked up any research on placenta previa.  I cannot imagine bed rest being a risk though. I specifically said "worst case scenario" implying a dire circumstance.  My only experience with placenta previa was via a friend.  She was put on bed rest in the hospital (no bleeding but experiencing early labor) and ended up delivering via cesarean at 35 weeks.

  • @animalcrckr‌

Bed rest isn't a risk for placenta previa but is not a treatment for it or many other conditions and carries it's own risk. That's what the paper is about...

  • I had a low placenta at my level 2 ultrasound. My OB and the ultrasound doc were not concerned-said it normally fixes itself. The ultrasound tech had asked if I had any complications with my first pregnancy and that scared me-making me think they saw something wrong. I go back in the middle of November and we will go from there if it didn't fix itself by then.
