Recommended Meds for Gas / Acidity

Hello Ladies

Hope you are all doing great with the babies : ) I can't wait for my boy to arrive - seems so farrrrrrr away :(

I thought my gas / acidity issues will go away / be under control if i am regularly sipping lemonade. However, yesterday, the pain was so bad - nothing helped ( unless i was ready to have a glass of my favourite coke zero - which I would not like to resort to) ..
So please tell me some pregnancy safe medicines I can take in bad situations...

Thanks :)

Re: Recommended Meds for Gas / Acidity

  • By gas/acidity do you mean like burping and heartburn? Or gas from your bum? I've been taking Zantac 150 OTC for heartburn and it's been amazing, much better than Tums. If it's bum gas, perhaps try Gas-X or Beano?

  • I find gas-x helpful for abd gas pains, and it's safe. But my heartburn usually goes away with Tums. Pre-pregnancy, I took an occasional omeprazole for bad heartburn ( yes, I know it doesnt work that way- but for me, effective). I dont think a swig of Coke zero would be terribly damaginf, if that fixes it for you... but you could have non diet non caffiene pop or soda water if that is your concern... good luck!

  • I've been having severe heartburn to the point where Zantac stopped managing it. My OB gave me the go ahead to take Nexium. I would just make sure anything you take is approved by your doctor.

  • I would recommend not drinking the lemonade or soda if you are having heartburn. I have bad heartburn on a regular basis outside of pregnancy and have to take a prescription for it. Lemonade especially Crystal Light type drinks are major triggers of heartburn for me, so that may be making it worse for you, not better. My gastroenterologists always recommend not drinking soda too bc of the acidity and to avoid caffeine in general because it is often a trigger as well.

  • I was told no zantac which is what I took pre-pregnancy. I use tums when I have to but diet change helps the most.

Foods/drinks that cause heartburn: Mints, citrus fruits, fruit juices (lemonade, oj, and even apple juice), greasy or fried foods, tomatoes (or things made with them), garlic (that's my weakness), butter/margarine, and sodas.

There are more, but these are the ones I have the hardest time avoiding. There are tons of more detailed lists of what may be making yours worse, aside from the hormones.
  • Thanks Ladies !
