SAHM's and breast milk stashes

If you stay at home, how much breast milk do you keep on hand, if any?

I currently have 12 oz in the freezer.  This would be enough for 3 4 oz. bottles.  I would only plan to be away from baby for about the time of a lunch with a friend, or dinner with DH.

I don't see any need for a huge stash (I don't plan to mix BM with cereal or anything).  Curious what others do.

  • Personally I'd want enough to last LO a few days. Just in case of an emergency like I was hospitalized or had to take meds or something.

  • With DS, I was home for 6 months and then went back to work, so I had a massive stash.  He went from breast to bottle without issue once he figured out nursing.  DD on the other hand, never accepted a bottle, despite our best efforts, so I used up my 48ish oz. stash in the process and have left my pump pretty idol in the last 10 months or so.  If your baby will accept a bottle, I think you have plenty for occasional use.  You can always pump more as it becomes necessary.

We tried a bottle for the very first time a few days ago, he's 8 weeks old.

He took it perfect!  I was nervous, but it worked out.  My husband put the nipple on his bottom lip, and he opened up for the nipple.  I asked my DH how he knew to do that, and he said from watching me breastfeed.  Can't believe he was paying attention!

  • I have 12 oz in the fridge. So three 4 oz bottles. DH gives her a BM bottle for her bedtime feeding. I pump to replace it and just rotate the three bottles. But because LO has been sleeping for the most part for 6 hours straight at night, she only eats from one side for her motn feeding. I then have to pump my other side and that pretty much goes into the freezer. I have about 30 oz in the freezer and have no idea what I'm going to do with it. Good for emergencies or if we will be out all day.
