Breastfeeding

rant/support/advice needed

Hi ladies! My DD is 2 weeks old. We have had many bfing issues. When we left the hospital she was dehydrated (not enough wet diapers) so we were supplementing. She had some latch issues, a posterior tongue tie and lip tie so we started using a shield. 2 lc's and an ENT said we would have to go 4 hours away to get it fixed and it Should help plus insurance won't cover it. We don't want to do this though. Eventually we didn't need to supplement. We did this for a week and she lost a pound from her birth weight at her 2 week appt. So she isn't transferring well. I now nurse with an SNS. I have been pumping since her birth and currently can get between 1 and 2 oz. I use that and formula. I can only get about half of what she needs. My right breast does well but lefty only gives about 10 mls. I wish I could get more from it. I pump every time she eats for 30 minutes, except at night when I only do 15 minutes. I power pump 2x's a day. I am eating lactation cookies, taking more mother's milk and I ordered Domperidone. I am ok with using formula if I have to but I am spending so much energy to get so little BM, I am wearing myself out plus I feel like no one can come over and I can't go out because of pumping.  I also only get drops not a spray when I pump even if I use compressions. What am I doing wrong or missing ladies?

  • I'm sorry your having such a hard time. I know that having the right flang size with your pump should help. I didn't even know there was a differance when I first started pumping and once I had the right size, I responded much better to the pump. Not sure if that helps any but keep up the good work! All you can do is try and in the end, as long as you and baby are healthy and happy, that's all that matters. {hugs}

  • Thank you ladies! I am speaking to a mom who went to the dr. 4 hours away about her experience and I think I will rent the hospital pump for a little while.

  • Hi there- just wanted to chime in that both of my kids (DS 3.5 years and DD 3 weeks) were tongue-tied and the clip made MASSIVE differences. We didn't discover DS's tie until our 3rd LC when he was three weeks old and the difference was night and day. For DD we now knew that ties can be hereditary so we had her evaluated (tongue and lip tie!) and clipped right away.
    DS was done by an ENT; DD was done by DS pediatric dentist. So maybe call some pediatric dentists to see if there's someone closer?
    Even if there's not - the difference for me was SO GREAT that if I were you I'd get in the car right now and make that 4 hour drive.
    FWIW I wound up nursing DS for 2 years... I did struggle for supply but never again had to supplement. This time around; having addressed he tie early on, I'm finding that I might actually have a little oversupply which is stunning to me.
    Good luck.
  • Big hugs mama, you are doing great!  It is so tiring but you are doing amazing, just hang in there. Two things that really helped me with the pump was making sure I was well hydrated, correct size flanges, and warm compresses on my breast.   I just put rice in a sock and heated it up for the compresses.  I felt like that combination helped to produce more milk and with let down.  Best wishes!
