Cradle Cap

Has anyone found any solutions to cradle cap? My son has it on the back of the top of his head. I asked our doctor and he suggested baby oil and a baby brush. We have been doing that for a few weeks now and it almost looks worse. Any suggestion?

I was going to suggest the same. That worked for us. Hmm maybe lotion afterward. I put Bert's bees lotion on her head when she had that. I did the oil in the bathtub as well so it made it really soft and easy to comb away. Not sure if you've tried that or if it would make a difference.

  • My niece had this pretty badly for a while. My sister used coconut oil. When that stopped cutting it, she went to a dermatologist for a cream that eventually cleared it up.
  • How do you keep baby oil on lo's head for 20 minutes without getting it all over everything? I tried baby oil and then massaging her head with a baby brush and then combing it out but she has so much hair it just made a mess. Now I just rub her head with my fingers at bath time. Im not sure if its doing anything!
  • I used mustela shampoo and a soft brush worked quickly.
  • Our pedi suggested selson blue and baby oil but that wasn't helping, then I started using olive oil and aveeno baby shampoo and that was helping but all of sudden he had this flare up where his head got really red. I spoke with the pedi yesterday and he's suggesting .1% hydrocortisone for three days at knight - it's over the counter so I'm going to pick it up and give it a try. It's a stubborn thing.

  • @Kimbus22 not related to the topic but Mallory looks like she's doing awesome! I just saw the updated pic.

Okay on to the topic. We use a soft bristle brush and the California babies shampoo 2x per week. Pedi said that was enough bathing since Dude has super sensitive skin. If I have to bathe more do to a poospolsion I don't wash his hair so I don't dry out his scalp.
  • @MK1013‌ do you wet lo's hair and put the oil on or do you put it on dry hair?

We had to scrub with a wash cloth each time- like really get down to the scalp and don't be afraid to scrub! Just watch the soft spots- baby seemed to enjoy it.

Exactly this. Haven't done anything special just rubbed it in the bath and it's slowly going away with each bath.

@Scotty138‌ we had a small patch on her eyebrow and I would just put a bit of coconut oil on it daily during diaper changes and then wiped the flakes off later with a wipe or cloth.
  • We used Gentle Naturals Baby Cradle Cap Treatment, I got it at Wal-Mart and it was around $5. we used it twice with the little brush and she hasn't had it again since.
  • We left oil on his scalp for a few minutes and then shampooed, using the bristly side of the scalp scrubbie brush to work the shampoo in. It cleared up after two uses and has never returned; we still regularly use the brush during shampoos.

  • Thanks All! This was so helpful!

We tried using baby oil gel and a baby brush to treat the cradle cap. It worked really well and it is looking way better. We did this in the bath tub so I think the warm water helped. Just wanted to share our success so far.
  • used olive oil and comb before bath time. Really useful

We tried this method tonight, with a regular baby brush, and it has helped. Hopefully it'll completely clear with a couple more rounds!

  • P's was pretty bad. What worked like a charm for me was scrubbing his head in the tub with warm soapy water, and then running a fine toothed baby comb over his scalp, cleaning out the dead skin after each stroke. I'd do it for 5iah minutes until it looked fairly clear, then blow dry it. I didn't do lotion or oil because I felt like it was just more crap caked on his scalp.
  • I did the oil thing before his bath a few times. Oil of your choosing rubbed into the scalp, let sit for 10-20 mins, then scrub with comb, and shampoo as normal, scrubbing with washcloth too.

  • I used coconut oil and it cleared up pretty quickly... but apparently it's something I need to keep doing because after 2 days without the oil it came right back  :(

  • We used the comb instead of the brush last night and it made all the difference.
