Pregnancy book?! The one I bought has awful reviews.

Well I bought what to expect when you are expecting because on of my friends swore by it but now as I read others post they say it's awful and if you want to read a pregnancy book you should pick one that's written by a doctor. I've only read like 15 pages and so far I think it's okay but they say when you start getting in to the 3rd trimester the author will
Make you feel like a loser if you don't do things her way. Your thoughts?! I really want to read a book that's comforting and explains the changes in my body and the baby's growth.

  • My favourite book 1st time around was Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin.  The pregnancy book by the Mayo Clinic was also pretty good.

  • I much preferred the Mayo Clinic pregnancy book over What to Expect.

Take what you read with a grain of salt.  Many of these books have biases and you have to sort through what your beliefs are.  I felt the same way with breastfeeding books.

Just remember that no new mom knows what they are doing and everyone is figuring things up as they go!

  • Love anything by Penny Simkin.

I just stuck to WTEWYE's weekly update pages. The info there is fairly good. Then google-searches for anything else, honestly.

  • We had both WTEWYE & the Mayo Clinic Guide.  I preferred the Mayo book, it's informative without being dense / alarmist.  But really, I referred to TB for pretty much all my questions ...

  • Just take everything with a grain of salt. I read that book and there was some good information In there. When I was pregnant with my first I read a bunch of different books and drove myself crazy. One of the books said it was dangerous to pump your own gas when pregnant... I had no choice to pump my own gas so I was sure that my kid would be born with an extra limb or something
  • I read WTEWYE and found it had some useful information, although the Mayo Clinic guide was better IMO. Like the other ladies said, take everything with a grain of salt.

  • In addition to the Mayo Clinic book, I really loved "the girlfriend's guide to pregnancy." The author isn't a doctor, but she is a mom and writes about all the stuff that no one else talks about. Very personable, funny, and easy to read!
