Snack time ideas

I feel like we have gotten into a rut with snack time when I am home with DS. Often we are out and about on the weekends and need quick packable things. DS ends up eating graham crackers, annie's snacks, gold fish, pretzels or cut up fruit. What other things are you all having for snacks for your LO's?

Re: Snack time ideas

  • Lol, um...pretzels and apples. Haha. Usually a fruit or pretzels or crackers. Seriously. I wish it were better but DD is allergic to life and hates vegetables, so it is what it is right now.

  • We just got these Sol Bites packs in one of the stores here, it's a Colorado product so it's probably easier to find in the US & they're nice. Comes with 4 crackers, almond butter & honey or peanut butter & jelly.

Sometimes we boil carrot sticks and can just pull some from the fridge for her. She loves oranges these days, bananas are a little more hit or miss, an avocado. I made these https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/no-bake-energy-bites/ the other day... kind of sugary but obviously DD loves them.
  • Raisins, Greek yogurt, string cheese, club crackers, cut up fruit like pears, apples, etc. I made fiber one muffins today but they were a fall because she ate two and didn't want dubber ... Oops!

  • We do yogurt (I pack a refillable pouch), applesauce (also pack in a pouch), cheese sticks, raisins, graham crackers, cut up fruit, Plum fruit bars (they are kind of like nutrigrain bars) and fruit crisps (also by Plum).

  • We tend to do a lot of meal-like snacks. I'll do a bowl of cheerios with almond milk, half a sandwich, toast with jam, scrambled eggs, crackers and cheese with an apple. We almost always snack together so it's mostly whatever I feel like snacking on we'll just share.

  • DD is the world's pickiest eater, but her snacks are usually string cheese, a banana, apple slices or whole wheat crackers. She will really do any fruit, so pears and grapes are also on the list!
Our little Samosa arrives in January!
  • T still loves his yogurt drops! We also do cereal (Cheerios, pops, sometimes lucky charms if I'm feeling brave), applesauce pouches, gogurt, fruit, crackers (he loves the cheez-it thin crackers), goldfish, and honey Grahams. These are our on-the-go snacks, at home it's usually a mini meal like PP said.

  • I add chia to food for a little extra protein, very easy to add it into peanut butter/yogurt/juice.
  • We do boring things, gold fish, fruit snacks, bananas, apples, pears, animal crackers, cheerios and fruit cheerios, ....

J hates cheese, so he won't do string cheese (weird, I know!!). And we haven't tried raisins, I think I'll pick some up and see how he likes those!

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • Thanks all---I think you ladies gave me a few new ideas to try out this weekend!

  • I make a pan of "Lara Bars" once a week, and I'll add in coconut for fat and nuts or Chia for protein.  I cut them into bars for myself, and I cut them into shapes for DS.  They're really easy to make, and I can change it up each week.  The basis of the bars are dried dates (high in fiber), another dried fruit (cherries, apples, blueberries), choice of coconut flakes, chopped nut, nut/seed butter, or chia, and sometimes cocoa powder or chocolate chips if I'm making a chocolate one.  All of it goes in the food processor, and I press it into a pan and refrigerate for about an hour so it stiffens up a bit before I cut them out and wrap in wax paper.  DS gets one in the morning before daycare (they get a full breakfast at daycare), and then I keep them in my purse throughout the weekend for when we're out and about.

DS is obsessed with sausage (DH is a hunter, so we have the equipment to make our own, so it's not the sodium and crazy filler stuff from the store).  We have a big breakfast on Saturday mornings, and I'll make extra and cut it up, and he'll actually eat it cold if we're out and about.  I've also tried this with cold scrambled eggs, and he'll eat those as well.

Applesauce pouches used to be his jam until it turned into apple season around here, and his daycare lady started making homemade applesauce for them.  Now he's become a bit of an applesauce snob.  I love that she makes their food homemade, but really kid, you have an applesauce preference now?!

I recently found a recipe for homemade fruit snacks that I'm hoping to try on maternity leave.  I found some really cute molds at a garage sale that create the shapes of lego blocks.

    @katrin_05:

This site is a good one for lots of variations, but once you get used to the ratio, it's easy to just kind of make up your own.  They've kind of become my "dump whatever I have in the pantry at the end of the weekend bar"

ETA: the website is selling a "bikini diet" program, which I'm not affiliated with at all.  I just referenced it because it has several variations of the Lara Bar recipe in one place.  Pinterest is another place to look for good recipes.
