Dying hair at 26 weeks?

I know there are many reasons they say not too dye your hair when pregnant in the 1st trimester, but I was wondering if anyone hear has done it at around 26 weeks or more and what their experience was like? What type of store brand hair color is best? What did your doctor say?

Re: Dying hair at 26 weeks?

  • Hello, and thank you for the welcome!
    I will look into it!
  • I agree I was just looking for other opinions,I don't see what the harm would be in that sense, but my doctor said I'd be better of waiting because there isn't to much to prove negative effects and what not.. To be safe... I'm still debating and will prob do do for another month
  • There was an old study that thought to link neurofibrmatosis to hair dye in pregnancy.  About 10 years ago, that was proven to have no statistical correlation - meaning no proof.  Do some research.. A consideration is highlights, in which the dye/chemicals don't actually touch your scalp.

  • I had my hair professionally colored and highlighted last week at 26 weeks. My salon uses a very natural brand of color, so I don't worry so much about the chemicals. However...my hair did not react the same way it does when I'm not pregnant, so we had to do an extra rinse of toner to keep it from being so brassy.

  • Just colored mine myself the other day. It is more about the fumes then anything. I just kept windows open and fan on. I also had colored my hair with DD who is now seven.
  • I did highlights at an Aveda salon at about 20 weeks and loved the result. I'm thinking of doing a box red/auburn for the fall, but I'm waiting til my next hair cut to see if the highlights still look ok or if I need to cover them up with color.

I also may try henna, have heard good things.

What brand did you use and did it take to your hair? I haven't died my hair in about 8/9 months I was trying to let it grow out but it just looks brassy now n I don't feel so hot! Lol
  • I have colored my hair at home in both my pregnancies. I do try to use a semi-permanent color that is on my hair for less time. It doesn't do quite as good a job covering my grays, but it's better than nothing! I have dark brown hair and use L'Oreal Healthy Look. Hope that helps.

  • Thanks for all you replies and advice ladies. I went ahead and dyed my hair today. I went from a strange copper n blonde bc I was letting my old hair dye grow out, to a dark chestnut brown... Did it with a box brand it was not a permenent but it was amonia free n so on.. I used it as a trial to see how my hair would react n if the cor would take with the hormones so if all is well in a few weeks I will eventually dye it the color I am interested in keeping for a bit!
  • New here - just as a side remark its recommended not to dye your hair at all during pregnancy here in Denmark where I am living. Same goes if your doing IVF etc. Interesting how different it is around the world.
  • Gotta re hash this VERY old thread ladies for a fast re-cap and question... When some of you ladies say "dye" do you mean like brown to brown or do you mean "bleach" like dark brown to blonde? I have never bleached my hair out during pregnancy but I am getting to the end of being "ok" with no blonde hair lol pretty sure I will do it just wondering about the resulting color if there have been any issues getting the results you wanted. Or if anyone was flat out told they could stay within the same family of "dye" but "bleaching" was out the question.

  • My doctor said it was fine to dye my hair. I avoided it in my first trimester just to be safe. I colored it around 6 months and just recently colored it again at 31 weeks. I got it done professionally though, not box color. Not sure if that makes a difference.
