Water

I just started my baby on solid foods. I read today that it is recommended to give 2-4oz of water each day in a sippy cup to help prevent constipation. Is this true? Has anyone done this? TIA!!

  • Curious about this too!

  • I never did with DD1. Just BM in sippy cup.
  • We haven't started solids yet, but let her have sips of water out of a small glass a few times per week. She doesn't get down more than an ounce at a time, I would guess, but she loves it. It's totally for play/learning and not anything else, though!
  • I didn't give water until about 10-11 months with DS1 iirc.

  • I found this one rapleyweaning.com:

This principle can work throughout the period of transition to family foods if the baby continues to be allowed to breastfeed ‘on demand’. A cup of water can be offered with meals as part of the opportunity for exploration but there is no need to be concerned if he doesn’t want to drink any.

Babies who are formula-fed need a slightly different approach, since formula has the same consistency throughout the feed and is therefore less thirst-quenching. Offering water at regular intervals once the baby is eating small quantities of food is all that is needed to ensure a sufficient fluid intake.

Not sure if this applies for non-BLW solid feeding approaches though, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

  • I never have done this. I always nurse the same amount when starting solids. Food doesn't replace BM or formula at this point.

  • Our ped said we could do water in a sippy cups for practice. Just small amounts and LO hasn't gotten the hang of it anyway

  • My LO loves to suck on an ice cube in a mesh feeder - this is as close to getting water as it gets for us.
  • Our pediatrician said we could give water in a sippy cup to get DD used to it but she hasn't gotten the hang of it.
I did notice the solids were backing DD up (lots of straining to go for over a day) so I started giving her an ounce of water in a bottle after she eats and it has helped with getting her to poop.
We'll let her keep practicing with the cup but I will offer her water from a bottle to help with her constipation.
  • Thanks for all the info!!!
