Nursing while Pregnant

Anyone here still nursing a little one or have in the past while pregnant? My 17 month old definitely does not want to wean, but it makes me jump when he latches. The pain is only a few seconds long and then I don't feel it anymore. Does this go away? I don't see a need to wean him, but I don't think that I can go through 9 months of this pain.

Re: Nursing while Pregnant

  • I am weaning my (nearly) 23 month old. It hurts like a summabitch so it's time. He has done okay for the most part--he only nurses at night at this point and I gradually decreased the time latched to just about a minute per side. The last few nights I didn't nurse at all. He was fine the first few days, but then the last 3 he has asked and then bawled when I wouldn't do it. It's breaking my heart--and his--but each day he is less and less upset and it gets easier. I would love to keep nursing him, but the pain is unbearable right now and I'm so nauseated.

  • Oh, I hope it goes away! DD will be 21 months next week and is nowhere near ready to wean. I can figure out tandem nursing, no problem, but this pain is almost unbearable. It's awful. I've tried putting her to sleep without it but I can't sit there and hear her beg for milk and NOT give it to her. I have it. It's for her. I can't just not let her nurse. So I'm trying to deal for now but it's more painful than when she was first born and we had a bad latch.
  • He still nurses to sleep. Now that hes in preschool he likes to nurse when we get home. I have no problem tandem nursing, but I just have to get there, oy.

  • i'm still nursing my 17mo - but i realized i had to be pregnant when i was getting irrationally angry with her for rolling over and trying to nurse in the middle of the night - ouch.  i'm considering weaning, but the couple of times i have tried to roll away and say "shop's closed, kiddo" did not go well...

I'm still nursing my 17 month old 2x a day (am and pm). Some helpful ladies on my other BMB FB group have informed me that the pain will go away after a while (one said 8+ weeks, another said 3-4 months). So far I only have pain on one side, but I'm able to distract myself. Luckily his nursing sessions are relatively short these days. Hang in there mama! The pain WILL go away.

Eta- some LOs will also self wean when supply drops. Hang in there!

Etaa- lol, I just realized who you are OP!
  • Yes we are still nursing and my nipples are so sore! My daughter is 23 months old and kind of hoping she self weans as my supply drops. But so far no signs of quitting and I am bearing through it. On the upside if she keeps going I hear it is great for engorgement!
  • I'm still nursing my 2 year old. We're down to just once or twice per day, but it's already starting to get uncomfortable.

  • I think every mom is different. Some moms are able to nurse all through pregnancy. I am still nursing my 18 mo old. With my last pregnancy, my milk dried up right away and it is again this time. My poor guy keeps asking for more milk :( With my last pregnancy, I feel that one of the hardest parts was not having milk for my older toddler (he was 14mo at the time). It was so worth it though, so I keep reminding myself that for this pregnancy.

  • I weaned my daughter around 20 months while pregnant with my son, it just hurt and was making me feel nauseous and uncomfortable.  She was down to one session per day, so we cut it out and offered her a sippy cup.  For a while I used my freezer stash and then slowly started decreasing the amount of breast milk and increasing the amount of regular milk.  She already was doing this the rest of the day, but for some reason she didn't want to give up that last session.  It was about three days of asking (breaking my heart) but then she stopped.  We both eventually got over it just fine.

I'm now nursing my son while pregnant with this one.  We'll see how long it goes, he still nurses a few times a day.  It's the availability thing that's tough.  Like PP said, if you're there and you have it, it doesn't make sense not to give it.

So I have DH give him a sippy cup and put him down.  Solves the problem of asking and they both love their cuddle time.

  • When my 14 month old latches, you have to peel me off the ceiling....hurts.so.bad. I think I've successfully cut out the morning feeding and am down to just the one time nursing session before bed. Very painful at times. Nursing is so good for him but I secretly hope he weans before the next one is born. I don't know if I could handle tandem nursing....

There are three reasons for breast-feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can't get it.  ~Irena Chalmers
  • @jillibean68 It's so nice to see you here! I must have missed when you asked A13, lol

  • My dd is nursing and nowhere near ready to quit. But it hurts
So bad when she latches and I get aggravated a lot of times while nursing. I've always been big on letting her wean when she's ready but ugh this hurts. We've been talking a lot about how she needs to just nurse and fall asleep no suckling for forever.
  • I'm nursing my 13 mo son and I am not having any pain. This will be my forth baby and I am freaking myself out wondering why I'm not sore! Maybe it is because I have been nursing for basically 5 years in a row:) I nursed my second daughter until I was about 5 months pregnant. My belly was getting so big it was hard to hold her so she could nurse. I would like to wean my son but I don't think he is ready (me either).

Glad I read through old threads before posting myself, ha!

I'm still nursing my 2.5 year old several times a day, she is no where near ready to wean and my supply hasn't dried up or anything. Last week latching was horrid, but I made sure she had a good latch and just powered through. I'd like to hope that it's all over now, but all of you are further along than me, so I feel like the pain will likely come back. Boo. I'm just playing it by ear at this point. If the pain really does get intense, I will considering weaning, I just hope it doesnt come to that.

  • This is not answering your question but I recently (days ago) weaned my 16 month old. At times, I am pretty sad about it--as is he--but he's adjusting pretty well.

  • I'm still nursing my 26 month old, and I have explained to him that I'm sore because of the baby. He says "I nurse nicey!" So far it hasn't been bad, but who knows how I'll feel in the coming weeks. At least he's being understanding. Lol!

Ha ha tried explaining this to my 25 mo old too but he didn't quite get it. He'll say,"drink Mommy's baby all gone," umm no son it doesn't work like that. Lol
I just have to insist that there's no teeth used! He gets sloppy and bites if he falls asleep
  • I am nursing my 18 mo LO before bed and when he wakes up. On the weekends, I'm also nursing before nap. My supply is extremely diminished and I'm sure it won't be long before he decides he doesn't want to nurse anymore. He's not much of a comfort nurser - he just wants his milk.

  • today while getting my beta test the medical assistant told me that I should stop bf'ing while pregnant.  I was pretty taken aback by it.  She wasn't able to give me a reason, but I guess she asked the doctor and that's what she said?  I've never had any issues with preterm labor or anything, and i'm only nursing at bedtime now - have any of you other mama's heard this from your providers?

  • I'm still nursing my 2.5 year old son. I'd prefer not to tandem nurse so I'm trying to figure out how to push him towards weaning. I don't know if it is possible because pregnancy seems to have increased my supply. I'm engorged to the point it hurts about half the day and I've been having problems with plugged ducts on one side for the past 1.5 months as a result. Now is not a good time to decrease nursing. lol

@Starbuck128‌ I'm nursing my 2.5 year old too and I feel like my supply is increasing as well. I had a motherfucking let down yesterday for the first time in over a year. What the what?

That is just crazy and untrue if there are no issues. Even with the uncertainty happening in my pregnancy, when I mentioned to my nurse that I am still nursing DS, she told me to keep doing it and asked if I had had diminished supply, which I have not.

I thought I'd answered this, but I guess not. I am still nursing DS, 22 months old. Before becoming pregnant, I had no real limit on when I would wean. Now, since I have no desire to tandem, I am thinking about to wean so that there is enough time between when he stops and the new baby starts (this thought is a little on hold until we know something definitive about the pregnancy). So far, my supply has been fine, but holy crap it hurts. It is getting better. I think the poor nipples  have just lost all feeling.

  • My doc told me to stop nursing bc of contractions. He is really old school though so I am going to keep nursing.
  • Yep, definitely nursing a nine month old, and I'm 5weeks along. It's not painful yet (maybe hcg isn't high enough yet? No MS yet either yet but oh it's coming...)

But with my second pregnancy while nursing my firstborn ..that hurt the most. Subsequent pregnancies/nursings have been less and less painful.

Hang in there! I would have loved to nurse my babies all the way through to 1.5 - 2 yrs but I roughed it till they were 1 year or they self weaned. 3 kids back to back.
  • Nursing my 13mo old- I'm hoping she self weans bc she is a horrible nurser, always has been. I have low supply and was on domperidone, which I stopped on her birthday. Since then it's like it's her mission to nurse ALL.THE.TIME. I do not want to tandem nurse, so I plan on weaning her by 3rd tri, but looks like it's going to be a looong battle.
  • I'm nursing my 8 month old and don't have any pain but I'm only 5 weeks along. I have noticed my supply dip like it normally does when I get my period though. I'm really hoping to be able to feed her up until that one year mark and not dry up.
