Leg swelling for the clueless

dangerous? Just annoying? Not sure what to think of it.
I have one leg that always feels a bit bigger and today it's actually sore and tight and almost numb and its a inch bigger then my other calf. I know it pretty common but I actually have no clue what causes this haha. I work on my feet so is it just bad circulation?

Re: Leg swelling for the clueless

  • I'm just wondering if it could be because I work on my feet (only 4 hrs a day) but then I sit for a hour on the way home, dunno if that would make any difference. It's not crazy painful of anything just noticeable

  • I get swelling and pitting edema in my legs and have during all of my previous pregnancies as well.  This one started about a week ago.  I drink tons of water and try to prop up my feet whenever I can.  Also, I find it's a good excuse for a pedicure with a really good calf massage ;)

It's caused by decreased circulation to the lower extremities.  While pregnant with DS1, my OB said it was because the baby was blocking/putting pressure on the veins/arteries that flow to that part of the body.  Said it's fairly common in pregnancy but can be a sign of pre-e if it's extreme.

  • Has your blood pressure been normal? I have swelling, but have pre-e which can bring that on.

Always worth a mention to your dr if it concerns you, but I think some swelling in pregnancy can be completely normal- especially if you're on your feet a lot.

  • I would definitely mention it to your doctor.  However to ease your mind, I have swelling in both my ankles and my hands on occasion (I should also say that I've been known to swell in my feet prior to pregnancy - like on airplanes).  My doctor's advice:  watch the sodium, drink lots of water, rest and elevate.  As long as my blood pressure is good, he was not concerned.  But you should definitely get your blood pressure checked (when my ankles and hands first got bad, I went to CVS and used their blood pressure machine to make sure that my BP wasn't sky high).

  • Swelling in your legs and feet is pretty normal, however I was reading recently that if one leg swells more you should call your doctor as it could be a blood clot.  I don't want to scare you or anything but it is probably better to be safe.  I had a lot of swelling in my legs and feet last time but it was always on both sides.
  • The majority of the time swelling is just annoying and not a real problem. Sitting on your drive home will not help the swelling. Elevating your legs, lots of water and compression socks work wonders! For me and two of my coworkers it is typical for us to have a "club leg" where one leg is more swollen than the other. Mine is typically my left.  Blood clots are serious and need to be watched for, but if it is pitting edema it is most likely just fluid.

  • I had one leg swell up much more then the other and my doctor took it very seriously and I was sent for an ultrasound to see if I had a blood clot. I didn't, and a few days later my other leg had caught up in size. Some swelling can be normal, but if it's only one, I'd get checked out ASAP.
  • Thanks for all the advice ladies. My blood pressure is not high in fact is always been low and I've had issues with dizziness so I know it's not that. It's not hugely different in size just annoying. I don't think it's anything to worry about but will bring it up with doc
  • Yes, talk to Dr about it, the swelling and pain are concerning....

  • Talk to the doctor. I had one ankle swelling and they made me come in to check it out. It was fine but what they checked for was swelling around the calf and pain - which I didn't have but you do. It's most likely nothing to worry about but when it's just one side they need to check for clots/DVT.
