April 2015 Moms

Really needing advice...

This is my first pregnancy. So I had an appt this morning. I am 10 weeks along and my doc said my first ultrasound won't be until 14 weeks, which I thought was kind of late. He also said we wouldn't find out the sex of the baby until 28 weeks. From everything I've read and had friends go through, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot. Can any tell me if this is normal or should I try to find another dr? Thanks!

Re: Really needing advice...

  • I'm having my first scan next week. I'll be 11 weeks I think. You can have an earlier dating scan but I've waited just so I can see my whole baby :) I think you're right in saying that you can't find out the sex until then. Hopefully some not so new mums can comment and give some advise :)

  • Different providers have different policies. If you like everything else, I would stay with this one. You can always go to a 3d place at week 16/18 to find out the sex.

I won't have my first sono until 18 weeks. My doctor told me that a lot of insurance companies only cover one sonogram so they try to make it around the 20 week mark. But they also said they should be able to tell me the sex of the baby at my 18 week sono. 28 weeks is so long to wait! But I feel the same, I see everybody 12 week ultrasound pictures and I feel like I'm missing out!
  • Thanks! I am also worried about all the tests that need to be done in a certain time frame. Which my doc said will all be done at the 14 week appt. I just have a lot a friends that have had major problems during pregnancy and I think I'm being paranoid.

Hmmm... For both pregnancies I had a dating ultrasound at 9 weeks, and NT ultra sound at 12.5 weeks as part of the genetic screening. Normally you find out the gender at your anatomy scan which happens between 18-21 weeks.
  • My birth center only offers two ultrasounds if you are low risk and aren't developing concerning symptoms. One at 20 or so weeks and one if you go over due. I'm sure you can request other ones, but my insurance won't cover it if it isn't deemed necessary by the midwife.
  • I think the first ultrasound at 14 weeks is somewhat normal I know some docs do it later than others. Not telling sex til 28 weeks seems weird as ish to me because I'm pretty sure the "usual" time to find out is 20 weeks, not to mention if you do an early check some places say they can tell as early as 14 weeks.
  • If the ultrasound dates are making you nervous, why not get a second opinion from another center? It could be your insurance or simply the doctor's practice. You'll never know until you ask!

My doctor waited until I was almost 12 weeks to do a doppler, that was a little bumming. However, I won't have an u/s til 18 weeks. My dr said in their office they try to wait to do an u/s til 18-20 weeks so they can make sure everything is far enough progressed that they can do a full screening on baby and make sure that everything looks right. I have friends who went through entirely different timing of things. I think it just depends on the provider. And if baby will allow it, usually you can find out gender long before 28 weeks.
  • I asked him why everything seemed off and he said it was bc I took so long to schedule my first appt. I called the day I found out I was pregnant and they couldn't get me in until almost 4 weeks later so it's not my fault the dates are off. I've been told there is a place I can go to do a 3d ultrasound and find out the gender as early as 16 weeks so we might just do that depending on the price. Thanks for the advice though!
  • The 20 week anatomy scan is super important--finding out the SEX of the baby is really trivial compared to everything else they're checking for. Seems like you and the ob are really focused on the sex and not the other important stuff checked during the exam, like heart, brain, etc. I would specifically ask about those factors.
  • Typically an anatomy scan is done 18-22w.  28 is late for that.

  • Like other people have mentioned i would check your insurance, it may be the clinic or your insurance. If its the clinic i would transfers out, and seek a clinic that would offer you all the scans you are entitled to. Private ultrasounds will do gender determination around 14-16 weeks, it ranges in price between $50-$80.
  • Everyone here is stating different time zones for your first U/S so it must also be where everyone lives. Different states, cities, counties etc have different times that they do things as well as individual doctors. I had my first ultrasound at 9 weeks and had another this week (11weeks). The first one I got for free at a pregnancy help center. You can look up clinics in your area that may offer this for free or at low cost aswell without leaving your normal OB. However it does sound like your OB is quite rude that he is blaming you for the time frame of scheduling. It sounds like you found out at a normal time, so don't let that make you wrong :) congrats on your little one. Remember to be assertive, you are the mother.
  • This is my second kid and with both there was a confirmation ultrasound at our initial visit. They have to confirm there's something in there that's where it should be. My next is 12 weeks and it's the Nuchal screen. Then 20 weeks for the tests (and sex). That's all pretty standard. I might call your insurance company and ask about policies. And then I might switch drs. 28 weeks is REALLY pregnant and I've never heard of any drs waiting that long.
  • I had my first u/s at my first visit at 8wks, my second u/s at 12 wks and will be checking for sex, heart and brain at 20 weeks. 28 wks does seem a little late, like some of the other women suggested try and talk to your doc or look for another opinion. I hope everything works out.
  • My schedule is the same 8wks/12/20, with appointments and additional scans at perinatal specialist because of twins. I would advise shopping around for a place that you trust and a scan schedule that you feel comfortable with. Pregnancy is a tender time, and you don't want to go through something as important as the birth of your baby with someone you don't trust!!
  • I think 14 weeks is too late to do the NT scan, if that was something you were interested in. So if you are interested, tell them now so it can be scheduled.
I agree 28 weeks seems late for a full scan. I personally wouldn't be ok with that because there are things they can discover at that scan which I may need as much time as possible to process. But personal preference...if you like them and are ok with it don't change to match other people's timings.
