Membranes stripped?

Hi ladies! Sorry if this is a repeat question, I searched but didn't find much.

My midwife mentioned today that she like to strip my membranes at 38 weeks, but the decision is up to me. I know this is controversial with 38 weeks being early term but she has good reason, I'm undecided though. My second daughter was born at 38+3 (came on her own) and weighed 9lbs 3oz and had a true shoulder dystocia so there is justifiable concern of this baby also having a shoulder dystocia as once you have one your risk of having another becomes 1 in 8 (I believe that's the risk anyway). Also this baby is measuring ahead and we are certain of my dates because I was charting and had an early dating ultrasound.

So I'm looking for other people's experiences with having their membranes stripped. Did it work? How painful was it? Anything else I should know?

Re: Membranes stripped?

  • I had my membranes stripped at my 40 week appt and DS was born 24 hours later (went to 41 weeks with DD and had to be induced). So it "worked" for me, but could also have been a coincidence since I was at the end anyways.

  • I had it done twice with my DD. I don't think it did anything, TBH, although after the 2nd time it was done, my water broke about 2 days later. I don't know if that was just coincidence though. Had it done on a Wednesday morning and my water broke late Friday night.

It isn't fun, but not the most painful thing ever.

  • I had it done at 40w and 41w last time and didn't have my baby until 41w5d. So, I can say it didn't work for me. I can remember it being a little uncomfortable, but it didn't hurt. I bled afterwards both times for the rest of the day, and had cramping. As you'll hear, it's only successful if your body and baby are ready to go anyway.

  • I've never had this done, but just wanted to mention that you should know your GBS status before getting your membranes stripped. If you're GBS+, you should avoid being stripped, as it can spread the bacteria.

Very good point. My midwives exact words were "if this comes back negative I'd like to strip your membranes at 38 weeks" right after doing the group b strep swab. So this could be a moot point for me but I'm an information junkie so I'll get as much info as I can just in case. :)

  • I had it done with my second. It worked for me. She was born about 12 hours later. A true shoulder dystocia is a scary thing and I'd probably do it in your position. I didn't find my sweep to be painful at all. Good luck with your decision!

Really? I was GBS+ and had mine stripped by my OB twice...interesting.

  • I had my membranes stripped twice with my dd and it did nothing. I ended up needing to be induced weeks later.

I had my membranes stripped at 40 weeks. I didn't really notice a difference between that visit and my prior cervical checks so the stripping didn't really hurt. However, my water broke immediately after as I was sitting there talking to the doctor. My body was not ready and neither was DD. Contractions did not start on their own, pitocin was given when nothing happened, and they used the vacuum to get her out. I had terrible tearing and it took about 4 weeks before I could walk without very bad pain. I will not be having my membranes stripped again and will wait for baby to be ready, but I do not have the same concerns that you do regarding size.

  • Mine were stripped last Thursday and it didn't hurt. I was super crampy on Friday but felt normal in Saturday. I am being induced tomorrow morning so it didn't bring on labor but hoping it helped me dilate a bit.

I know this is a very rare situation but my sister had her membranes stripped at 39+ weeks with her son about 7 years ago. Long story short, something went wrong and baby was born stillborn 2 days later. For this reason, I personally will never consent to having my membranes stripped. I don't think we will ever know exactly what happened in my sister's case, but know that there is definitely risk in having your membranes stripped. I know this is an extreme example, and I'm really not trying to scare anyone....just a reminder that you should always weigh the risks and consider the possibility of extreme outcomes, especially for an optional procedure. I'm sure it can be beneficial for some people.
  • Sounds painful. Cervix checks are bad enough.
