Advice re: Pneumonia

An elderly family friend of mine is very ill with pneumonia and may not make it. I wanted to go visit, take flowers and give well wishes but didn't know if that was a smart idea. How contagious would an elderly person fighting pneumonia be? He's also had it for a week and just come home from the hospital to receive hospice care in-home, so I'd imagine he's less contagious now. What is everyone's advice?

Re: Advice re: Pneumonia

  • As far as I know, pneumonia is not likely to be contagious if the person is on antibiotics.

I recently visited my grandma when she had pneumonia and I did not get sick nor did anyone else in my family who visited/cared for her.

  • If it were a close friend and I wanted to be there, even if it were contagious, I would likely go. I wouldn't stand near his face, and maybe wear a mask to protect you?  But if he may not make it, I would want to see him one last time.  That's just me, though, I'm sure not everyone is comfortable with that.

I'm sorry to hear this :(

  • If they sent him home hospice, then I would definitely go. I take care of pneumonia a lot and I've never gotten it... And these people actively have it. Just wash your hands before and after.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I like the face mask idea, I think he'd be understanding of the extra precaution given the circumstances.
