Induction but not dilated..vaginal delivery?

Hey all. I'm getting induced starting Sunday night (I'll be 41 weeks). They are starting out with cervadil that evening and then starting pitocin in the morning. As of today, still not dilated and only 50% effaced. Dr. warned me that because cervix is not yet dilated, the induction could end up in csection. Has anyone been induced when not dilated and still ended up delivering vaginally?

Re: Induction but not dilated..vaginal delivery?

  • One of my best friends was induced the other night. Her cervix was completely closed so they inserted the cervadil. It ended up putting her completely into labor and she delivered her baby girl less than 10 hours after the cervadil was first placed.

This was pretty much me. My cervix was closed and I was 2cm dialated when they inserted the cervidil. Put me completely in labor, my water broke on its own, and had my baby 11 hours and 45 mins after they inserted the cervidil. No pitocin or c-section necessary.

  • Lurking from O14. I was induced at 41 weeks with my DS. I was also not dialated at my appt before and barely a fingertip when I went in. I had cervidil overnight and pitocin the next morning, and then waters broken around noon. I delivered vaginally around 3pm. FX for you, everyone's story is different.

I was a "tight" 1cm dilated when my water broke at home. It took two rounds of cytotec, pitocin, and 24 hours, but I delivered DS vaginally.

ETA: meant to add, even though my water broke - My body never got the contractions going on its own, so they counted me as an induction.

  • I was not dilated or effaced at all with DD1, induced and delivered vaginally. It is very possible, try to go in assuming you will deliver vaginally rather than thinking it will just automatically end in a c-section.
  • Thanks everyone! Makes me feel so much better!
  • My water broke (no dialation, contractions or labor).  I was induced and had a vaginal birth 21 hours after my water broke.

I was induced with both and dilation didn't affect the type of delivery at all.

#1 Induction at 39+4, no dilation or cervical changes of any kind - vaginal delivery
    #2 Induction at 41+6, 3 cm dilated - c-section

ETA: I should add that my second would have ended up in a c-section whether or not I was induced. She had overlapping sutures and she was trying to come out at the wrong angle. The combination of the 2 made her head get stuck on my pubic bone and she wasn't able to descend. It had nothing to do with the induction itself.

  • Only a finger-tip dilated for me when I checked in to be induced due to low fluid. Cervadil went in at 3:25pm and I had my sweet baby in my arms at 9:47am :)

  • My water broke (no dialation, contractions or labor).  I was induced and had a vaginal birth 21 hours after my water broke.

Same story, different labor lol. I had DD1 12 hrs later.

  • My first delivery I was induced after my water was leaking. I was not dilated or effaced at all (fingertip... maybe) and was on pitocin for over a day.... 30+ hours from start of induction to vaginally delivering my son.

My second delivery I was dilated 3cm at my 39 week OB appointment, 3 hours later I was 6cm and in active labor, I was 10cm and ready to push an hour after that.... ended in an emergency c-section due to DD's position coming down.

There are so so many factors, but a vaginal delivery is definitely not out of the picture for you. GL!
