TTC After a Loss

Intro

Hey ladies. I've been reading and reading and driving myself crazy, so I guess it's time I actually introduce myself. I got married in March of this year, but late last year decided to go off birth control. I have PCOS, and I've been told it would probably be difficult for me to conceive, so I figured the earlier we started trying, the earlier we could get help if we're having issues. Well, low and behold, I got pregnant in January. I was shocked and thrilled! I miscarried at 9 weeks - the week before my wedding. I was devastated, but because of everything going on with the wedding, it helped that I didn't have time to lose it. I felt like I was doing pretty well emotionally until recently. Now that we're trying again, I have so many questions that I really don't have answers for. What if my PCOS prevents me from getting pregnant again? What if I do get pregnant and miscarry again? Since I don't really have anyone in my support system who's been through this, I'm looking forward to connecting with people who can relate.

Hello, and welcome to the board.  I'm very sorry for your loss.  I don't have much experience to offer you in terms of PCOS.  I would think that you conceiving once is a good sign but that's me speaking as a definite non-expert.  As far as having a second miscarriage, your odds do not go up, I believe, unless there was some sort of identifiable cause.  I believe the odds are just the same as miscarrying a first pregnancy.  Unfortunately it is one of those scary risks that come along with being pregnant.  Wishing you all the best. :D

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Welcome to the board.

I was referred immediately to an RE once I was DX with PCOS. Is this a possibility for you? Make sure you get a full blood work up as there are many things that can be associated with PCOS such as thyroid issues, which I was also DX with. If you ever want to talk feel free to PM I'm by no means an expert but I'm willing to listen and advise as best I can.

  • I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like your dates were very close to mine (edd 10/7 with a MMC at 9 weeks last March). There are various check-ins on this board with loss boards being one of them. If you would like to make an intro on whichever one your due date would have fallen in please feel free. Welcome.

  • Welcome. I am sorry for your loss. I also have PCOS and it my DH and I 9 years without intervention for our first pregnancy. I would definitely look into seeing an RE. They may still have you wait 1 year without success. I hope your stay here is short.

  • Sorry for your loss

I don't have experience with PCOS, but I do have a history of cysts and I have what the Dr. calls a "possible endometrioma" He told me it most likely won't cause trouble TTC and won't cause a miscarriage.  I don't know how/if that varies from PCOS.  I would bring all your concerns to your Dr. and maybe he/she could give you more info and put your mind at ease.

GL to you and I hope your stay here is short and sweet :D

  • I am very sorry for your loss.  I have PCOS, so I can speak about this a bit, but you really need to talk to your doctor.  How was your PCOS diagnosed?  Have you had a full CD3 blood panel done?  Most doctors aren't willing to refer you to an RE until you've been trying for a year with no success (time restarts after a loss) or after 3 losses, so you might not be able to get a referral yet, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.  Based on your PCOS diagnosis, your OB might be willing to refer you if you'd like.  Yes, PCOS can make it harder to conceive.  It can really screw up your hormones!  Do you have long, irregular cycles off BC?  I would recommend that you start temping, since that will tell you if you are Oing.  PCOS can prevent Oing, so if that is your case then seeing an RE might be something to look into sooner, rather than later.  If you are Oing, then you might want to try on your own for awhile before seeing an RE.

I know, that's as clear as mud, but you really need to know what your body's doing (or not doing) before you will know how to proceed.  PM me anytime if you have questions.

  • Thank you for the warm welcome!

Rmpar29, I was diagnosed a few years ago, and went to an endocrinologist for awhile. After many many visits and lots of blood work, I felt like I wasn't any better off than before, so I quit going. My cycles are pretty regular most of the time, but I've also had some pretty bad ruptured cysts. I don't think I'll go back to my endocrinologist, but if I need it, I'd be open to going to an RE. I haven't been tracking my temperature, but I think I'll start.

Meredithcarole, my edd was 10/6, so really close. To jj32 as well, I'm sorry for your loss. When I miscarried, it seemed like the type of thing you're not really supposed to talk about, especially amidst the wedding celebrations, which was incredibly isolating. It's comforting to know I wasn't the only one going through that.
