STM who have received chiropractic care

Morning ladies, I just started seeing a chiropractor based on the recommendation of my midwife. I have always been a skeptic and even after my first adjustment I still kind of feel like they are all quacks. The reason for my starting down this path is strictly to help align my pelvis for a (hopefully) faster labor and delivery.

My question is this. If you had chiropractic care with your first baby, did you see the results from it? How long was your labor? Do you think it helped prevent any complications during labor and delivery? Would you do it again?

Re: STM who have received chiropractic care

  • I had a lot of hip problems in my first pregnancy and spent most of third tri seeing a chiro because walking was so unbearable.  I ended up needing an emergency c/s so I can't say that it helped with L&D, but it made walking (a much needed task) so much easier and more comfortable.

I haven't had those issues this time but if they do creep up, I'd gladly go back.  And pregnancy was the only time I've ever seen a chiro.

  • I saw a chiropractor my first pregnancy and this pregnancy weekly. I don't know for sure if it helped with labor, but I had a 7 hour labor start to finish and no complications. This pregnancy I am a lot more sore and definitely need the chiropractic care to even be able to walk without pain and I plan to see my chiropractor up until I go into labor.

  • My hip was dislocated for 3 weeks (until last friday). I saw an amazing chiropractor twice and it's completely back in. It feels so much better.

  • I a FTM, but I second that chiropractors aren't quacks...they're like any other kind of doctor, there are the really bad ones, the meh kinda ones, the good and the awesome. Did your midwife recommend one to you? Chiropractors who use the activator/Thompson method or the Webster method are good for pregnancy, I know there are other techniques, I just don't know all the names.
I have had amazing personal experience with chiropractors - when I was 16 I had a disk go out in my back, and we were able to make it go back in. This pregnancy I have had sacrum (tailbone issues) and my chiropractor has helped me able to walk and sit down and sleep, by putting it back in place.
I second @WildFlower810 - don't give up! Find a good chiropractor, recommended by a reliable source.
  • Definitely don't give up! It takes few appointments to truly feel the results. I never saw a chiro for my first two pregnancies. I suffered from hip pain with both from 6 months and beyond. Now I'm seeing one weekly, the hip pain is a lot reduced, barely noticeable!! She can do the Webster method and will begin doing that weekly to encourage LO to stay head down. (He's flipping a lot!!!). IMO, chiros Adjustments are totally worth it.
  • FTM mom here too but I went to a chiro mid-2nd tri because of extreme back and hip pain. Turns out it was really just my hips out of alignment. in 2 visits he had me fixed up and I have only needed 1 follow up since.

Oh and LO had been breech the entire time without switching positions. Since my hips were aligned she has been able to move around like she is supposed to and hasn't been breech since.

  • I saw a chiropractor last pregnancy and this pregnancy. I can't say for sure if it made a difference to labor and delivery but it definitely helped with sciatica and back pain. I've also seen a chiropractor when I was training for my last marathon and I swear that she was the only reason I made it to the start (and finish) line.

  • I had no chiro care with my first and I had a 6 hour labor.

I had chiro care with my second and had a 1.5 hour labor.

    I love my chiro.

  • Thank you all for your insight and experiences. I will give it a shot and and hope for the best. I know that so many other things can affect birth but if doing any one thing can help then it will be worth it.
  • Meh, no to all of that. I saw a chiro with DS for general pregnancy pains and for migraines. He was the third chiro I had seen for migraines and the third that gave up on me. I was induced with DS due to HELLP, so, I guess the chiro didn't help ward that off. I labored for 8.5 hours and pushed for 2 hours. Can't say the chiro helped any of that. He helped with some of the general pains but it wasn't anything amazing. I kept up the treatments just as a precaution. I haven't gone this pregnancy. I don't think they are quacks, but I also don't believe that they are always the miracle workers they proclaim to be. They are for some, but not for all. I just happened to fall in to the latter category.

  • I love my chiro. I see one that is trained in Webster technique-- it's a technique used especially in pregnancy. I had horrible sciatica pain last pregnancy as well as general aches and pains. I've been going since 18 weeks this pregnancy and my sciatica has been cured as well as all discomfort. It's seriously awesome and sooo worth the $$
