Sick and pregnant SUCKS! Does any pregnant friendly meds work?

So, after having copious amounts of snot since Wednesday last week, I went to my doctor yesterday after it turned from clear to yellow (yum, right?) on Sunday evening.  I was so packed in my sinuses that when I used my Neti pot, the water would go up one nostril and just run back out, unable to break through all of the snot.  My teeth and eyes hurt so bad from the sinus pressure :(

Doctor (GP) diagnosed a "raging" (her word) ear infection and a sinus infection.  She prescribed Amoxicillin 2x a day for 10 days.  Granted, today is only day 2, but the sinus pressure is still there.  She said that even though my OB said Sudafed was ok, she didn't recommend it, especially since I'm "high risk" carrying twins.  She said Benadryl would be OK and Tylenol.  Well, Benadryl makes me feel shaky, so I don't like to take it and the Tylenol isn't helping the sinus pain.

I guess I really just want to bitch about being sick, so thanks if you're reading this... anyone have any insight into if the pregnant friendly meds ever really work, or should I just plan on being miserable a few more days until things finally kick in?

  • I had a pretty bad cold with major congestion last week and I used a humidifier and breathe right strips at night. I was at least able to sleep a little bit!

  • I never even thought of Breathe Right strips.  That is an EXCELLENT idea!

  • Good lord, woman!  If snot has you in desperate need of TMI maybe you should avoid pregnancy discussions altogether, cause it's all mucus, leaking, pee, poo, brown nipples, blood, water, swelling and really Ii could go on and on.  Then the baby happens and those things are your life. In the flesh.  Not discussion.

She did say "please, and i hope you feel better!" I don't think that's necessary a desperate need.
Also, i was eating too, but i wasn't getting anywhere with this nausea so it doesn't matter.

To answer your question OP, If you go to your dr's website, a lot of times they list what they recommend for meds.  I go there daily.

  • An Upper Respiratory Infection last week had me reeling, but I took off to rest it out. I used Breathe Right Strips (try the Extra!), a humidifier, and a little Vicks under my nose. I also put Vicks on the bottom of my feet and put socks on. Seems silly but I read about it and was desperate to try anything.

Tylenol helped to relieve my aches, but nothing beats sleep. A week later, I'm starting to feel better. Good luck!
  • I have the WORST sinusitis right now, which means I'm sleeping with my mouth open and waking with a sore throat every morning! Mine always shows up when the seasons change though... Allergies. I totally hear you with the teeth/eye discomfort from the sinus pressure, though. My tried and true methods of relieving that pressure/congestion are steam, soup, and (good) sex. My patients never believe me about that last one - but I swear - an orgasm clears your nasal passages!
