Labor Music Playlist

edited September 2014 in January 2015 Moms
My friends are all over the board with this one. Some had them and loved them, some had them and hated them...others didn't even think about it. If you did have one that helped, share some of your music choices (as long as you didn't choose Salt-n-Pepa's "Push It" ;) ) Since my doctor had me fill out their birth plan sheet at my last appointment and of course the "dim the lights" and "I want music playing" options were there-it got me thinking, do people really labor playlists? According to Dr. Google...people do. Did you? Will you this time around? Or waste of time? Are we talking Enya, Bob Marley, and Jack Johnson to relax...or your favorite work out mix to get you pumped up?

Re: Labor Music Playlist

  • I labored to Kanye West's my dark twisted fantasy
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm a FTM so I don't know what will actually happen.  However, I am making a list of things to listen to but it's not music   :)  Having had a couple of physical issue that resulted in episodes of chronic pain I found that listening to content that distracted my brain was a big help.  So I'm saving up some favorite podcasts (I love Ira Glass and This American Life) and also some books on tape that are some old favorites.  Because I've listened to the books a number of times I'm not worried about missing parts if I'm distracted by a contraction, but they are funny and make me happy.

  • I labored over my labor playlist! It was phenomenal. And then when real labor started, I wanted nothing to do with it (or anything else I brought).
  • If there was music playing I would of had no idea! I was hardcore concentrating on getting that baby out!
  • My labor started around 1am and I just wanted an epidural and to get some sleep. I don't even remember all of the people in the room during the delivery. I tend to block everything out to get through pain. I didn't feel the need for music and I'm not worrying about it this time around either.

  • Music is probably great for early labor. But when you're in transition, it's like you're in another universe. I wouldn't have even known if there were music playing then.
  • I went back and forth between watching a Ridiculousness marathon and crying.

  • Had no music or any plan of music although I'm so terrified of needles and when needed an epidural was shaking and crying so bad I was so scared. When the guy who did it came in he was so calm and brought his iPod and iPod player in my room and asked me what I wanted to hear. I told him I was to scared to care and he's like alright well jam out to my 80's dance music that and my singing along should distract you enough. He actually made me laugh at one of the scariest times and I really hope to get him again if I get an epidural this time.

That's so sweet of him! The guy who did mine was really rude.

  • I had music playing the entire time.  My advice is to make a few different playlists.  I thought I would want chill, relaxing music and I ended up wanting something more upbeat.  Glad I had made a couple of different playlists.

  • As a music lover (who would have guessed) I actually think I may not lije music during labor. It's hard for me to say that now, I realize. But today I'm dealing with a cold/virus and feel like crap and a nurse turned on the radio in my room and I dealt with that nonsense for 2 seconds before it was turned off... I don't like music when I feel crappy, apparently. I like silence.

So obviously comparing a virus to labor isn't the same haha.. But I still have a feeling it won't be my thing.

  • H made a CD to take with us to the hospital, but by the time we got there things were happening so fast that it never made it into the player. Even during the time I was laboring at home, I wanted total silence during contractions. I didn't want H talking to me or touching me during contractions because it took my focus off of where I needed it to be. This time around, I may try earbuds with some relaxing music during labor. It seems like earbuds might help drown out the rest of the world if the music playing through them isn't overly distracting.

  • I picked the "my So took over" option, but it wasn't music, it was College Football ;)

If this labor goes anywhere near as fast as my first birth, then I won't have time to listen to a playlist, much less a whole song.

  • If there was music playing while I was in labor, I'd never want to hear those songs again! No music, no soothing words. I'm a "get this baby out of here" kind of labor person. DH tried to be so comforting with my first, but all it did was piss me off. I was trying to focus on what I was supposed to be doing. I had my mom there the second time. She been through many of her own and understands how I get when under pressure. I'm hoping to schedule another induction again so that she can be there when it's time again.

We didn't have a play list, per se, but music was definitely present. My dd was born to CCR and then we played the song she was named after immediately after she out.

  • All Sir Mix A Lot, all the time... Can't you just imagine the conversations in the staff lounge?

Or maybe a combination of The Sex Pistols and The Violent Femmes.
  • Whatever was on tv at the moment was the background noise.  I would not have been paying attention to whether there was music or not.
