Naming Issues

Is anyone else on the "I have no idea what to name my baby" bus? DH and I have nothing. We agree that we like more traditional names, but that's about it. We've looked through the books, written lists, looked online, just sat down and talked about names; we've tried it all and nada. Like, we don't even have a top 3. I haven't been that worried about it, but as I'm now in week 30, it's starting to bother me. Every couple days someone asks (friends, family, co-workers) and every couple days I say we don't have a name yet. I think making matters worse is that my BIL and SIL are due a week before us and they have a name picked out, so I'm beginning to feel like what's wrong with us cause we can't pick a name.

I'm done complaining now. I was just having a hard time sleeping this morning because I kept thinking about names. And then I thought of one I liked, but that would give her the initials LSD which DH doesn't think is appropriate. I suppose he's probably right about that.

Names are really tricky and seem like such a big responsibility. If you give us some ideas of names that you were possibly considering maybe we can help? I love traditional names too.

I'm only 22 weeks but we haven't finalized a name yet - we have one that we both like but we don't LOVE. Then I have one that I LOVE and DH has one that he LOVES. My guess is that we won't use any of those names at all and will come up with an entirely different one.

The biggest annoyance is that I want to decorate the nursery with these star wars prints from Etsy - and they have her name on them so we need to finalize the name to finalize the nursery. It looks like I will be ordering them from the hospital just to be safe.

A friend of mine has the best naming story:
Her brother's wife was due a few months before her. When the baby boy was born they still had no idea what to name him, so my friend went out in the hall where they have all these little footprint with baby names on them and started yelling out names. One name was William.
A few days later they announced the name: Wil. Just Wil. Not even a second L .. my friend relentlessly teased her brother and sister in law about the unfinished name.
A few months later when my friend gave birth to a boy ..they named him Liam. To finish baby Wil's name.

So now there are two four year old cousins, Wil and Liam .. with a hilarious family joke/tease behind their names ...

I laughed 'til I peed when she told me this story.

Names aren't easy. It's a big responsibly .. I have no great advice, but wish you luck.

We've chosen Oliver Heath for our little boy. Would have used Madeleine Flora for a girl..

The girl name that I like would give the initials OMG!! Probably wouldn't go with that either just because I could easily see that coming back to haunt me! (or her!)

We did have a short list for my son, but we didn't pick his name until discharge day at the hospital, it'll come to you.

No worries. DS didn't have a name until right before he was born. All we had was a list of names we didn't both hate. Naming a real person is insanely more challenging than people lead on!

We can't come up with anything. We either hate each others suggestions or we like but don't love a name. ....didnt have this with ds...so frustrating:(

Picking a name is really hard. We are both very into family names, so the middle name was easy. It was the first name that was difficult for us. We did pick a name we both like, but we still argue over whether she will be Lilly or Lillian. I call her Lilly. DH calls her Lillian. Then last night, I got really freaked out that she'll be born and turn out to be a boy and we don't have a boy name. I LOVE the name Benjamin James, but he'd be BJA so no. Other than that, I have nothing so I've just got everything crossed that she really is a she. If not, I know we'll figure out something.

It'll happen. Something will sound right whether it is before or after birth.

I found it hard to name our DD because it felt like such a huge responsibility. I drove DH and others batty, but she got a name around 35 weeks

Take your time and don't worry too much about her not having a name yet. (Easier said that done, I'll bet, but still.

)

34 weeks and this is our problem too, we're so far apart on the names that we each like. We have maybe 3-5 for each (boy/girl) that we're OK with but that neither of us really loves, they're just OK. It's disappointing that our child will probably have a name that his or her parents don't love, but I guess it's better than having a name that one of us loves and one hates! We were just talking about it last night and after about an hour of discussion we're not any closer to shortening our lists. It's so annoying! I figure if all else fails, when the baby is born I'll just pick the name that I like the best from the list and H will have to deal.

Naming is hard- DD didn't have a name until 24 hours after she was born!

With this pregnancy I am still very early but we probably won't even discuss untill 25+ weeks because I wont make a firm decision until after babe is born! It is such a huge decision. Good luck and don't worry, once babe is born you will know what fits them.

I didn't have a name until my mother was being discharged and they had to do my birth certificate. It will come to you. Don't stress. I know easier said than done.

I feel very lucky we are having a girl, cause MH and I could come to no consensus about boys' names.

When you meet LO, I think that will help.

Thanks for the reassurance. It makes me feel better to know I'm not alone in the dilemma.

On the upside, we met with a pediatrician today and we both really liked her. So, that's good.

I'm almost 22 weeks and the only name this baby has is a last name! We are so far apart we don't even have any maybe's, just definite no's. DH is thinking along the lines of Fred or Veronica, and I am thinking Benjamin or Harper. I hope we come to a consensus by the time LO is born!

Good luck to you, I've never met anybody without a name before I'm sure it will come to you eventually.
