Natural/Non-toxic cleaners

Anyone have a line of natural/non-toxic cleaners that they really love?  I am too lazy to make my own out of vinegar, etc.  I've used Method in the past.

Dapple is my fav! Amazon carries several of their products (the surface wipes are seriously awesome). BRU carries some too.
  • I will check those out, too, @eora3

  • Too lazy to fill a bottle halfway with vinegar and halfway with water?
    :-B
It's sad but true.  The laziness mostly stems from actually have to go and get a bottle to do the mixing in.  Me =  L-)

  • lol. I use an old spray bottle that had something else in it. Probably windex or something before I made the leap.
Good idea.  I actually think I have one.

  • I use Norwex microfiber for cleaning. I tried vinegar when I decided to get rid of all of my nasty chemicals and I just couldn't stomach the smell (even with essential oils added to it) and it seemed to leave a film on things. I literally clean my whole house with the cloths.

If I do need a liquid for whatever reason, just plain old soap & water does the trick. Disinfecting is not necessary in most cases, just cleaning is sufficient.

  • My husband and I own a green cleaning company and we use Melaleuca cleaning products along with Norwex microfiber cloths. I'll never use anything else
  • Thanks @ashleykadlec!

  • I'm fairly loyal to the Method surface cleaner even though I know full well I could make my own for a fraction of the cost.  I just really love the smell, and cleaning is not exactly my natural state, so anything to make it more appealing. ;)
  • I hate the smell of vinegar. I use CleanWell or Biokleen.

This is also true.  And part of my laziness.

  • You do have to mix it, but I love Dr Bronners SalSuds. Mostly because I have a deep love of the smell of pine. It can be used for pretty much everything :) Expensive at the outset, but it is super concentrated so a little goes a long, LONG way!

  • Try Bio Green Clean and mention Ed from the Ed show for a discount. Upfront cost is a bit high but oh boy is it worth it!! Wash veggies to oil stains off your driveway. It is all plant based- so safe you can drink it, but I use it for streak free windows and whatnot instead of sustanaince.
  • I use the BRU brand and really like it.
  • Vinegar, baking soda, Dr. Bronners, water, Seventh Generation, some Method, some "green" versions of regular label products.

By the way, vinegar is GREAT to put in laundry. It's a natural fabric softener and neutralizes urine. I found this out when we used cloth diapers with the girls, and I keep several gallons in the laundry area and routinely add it to the girls' loads. I just add it to the liquid bleach dispenser.

  • I use a combo of Method, Seventh Generation and homemade stuff made with Dr. Bronner's, vinegar, baking soda, etc.  Some of the homemade stuff I've tried just doesn't cut it (i.e. I don't like just straight vinegar and water for surface cleaning), so I make the stuff that works well and is fairly easy/cheap to make, and just buy whatever else I need.

  • @sysakbaby and @Cheekers2010 I just use the generic grocery store distilled white vinegar, 5%, usually about a cup in a large load of laundry for general softening and disinfecting. That's about the amount in the liquid bleach dispenser. For really badly urinated clothing (if the girls have had an accident or the cat peed on something), I'll sometimes just soak the article(s) of clothing in vinegar and throw some in the wash water as well. It's just vinegar, so the worst that could happen is that the clothes smell a bit like vinegar when wet, until it fades or you wash them again.

I've seen recipes for homemade vegetables dyes that also use vinegar and/or salt as a dye fixative, and I've never had any problems with running dyes, just FYI in case you were wondering.

  • I ditto Norwex.  Initial investment pays off pretty quickly and you're not using ANY chemicals, just their microfiber stuff and water.  There are videos too testing how well it works too and it does get rid of 90 or so percent of bacteria on surfaces.

  • The laundry detergent is something I continue to struggle with however. We live in a rural area and are on well water, most detergents that do not have the "fillers" don't work great on hard water. I've recently started using Ecover, which seems to be the best of all of them that I've tried so far and it has an A rating on EWG.

When I started using Norwex about a year ago, not only did I stop using cleaning chemicals but I also stopped using any face wash, body wash, etc. I only wash my face with their microfiber body cloths. I haven't put soap on my face in over a year and even through all the crazy pregnancy hormones, my skin has stayed very nice & clear.

  • I am House cleaner, I use method but sometimes I must use bleach. I hate using it but I make sure to have all windows open and try and wear a mask .

I make my own bc I have most of the things on hand (vinegar, water, lemons, baking soda) vs getting in the car and going to the store. I'm too lazy for the latter. :-/
This- I make mine w/ some vinegar, baking soda and lemon and some water. I think the lemon and baking soda help keep the smell down, so might be something to think about.
