sick? or normal symptom?

I'm 22 weeks and 2 days pregnant right now, and starting yesterday I've had a stuffy nose, then this morning I had a really bad stuffy nose that has been lasting all day plus my eyes keep watering and I'm sneezing more then usual. I'm a FTM so I'm not sure if I can take any medicine or what and I've never had allergies and I haven't been around anyone whose sick. So am I sick or is this normal? If I am sick, what can I take that is safe for baby?

Re: sick? or normal symptom?

  • I'd call your OB. You're likely getting a cold. My OB is fine with Tylenol Cold, Benedryl (regular, plain old Benedryl) and Zyrtec. I see a high risk OB so I presume they are relatively conservative about these things, but not all OBs are in agreement about meds.  Give them a call and ask, try to nip it in the bud. I got really sick (started with the same symptoms) in August and it turned into a RAGING cold with headache, brutal cough, sore throat for 4 days, etc.  I started with the same last Monday minus the sore throat and it's JUST going away now (knock on wood) with some nightly Benedryl this time around.

There's a lot of colds and such roaming so I would definitely give a call.  I hope you feel better!

  • This sucks lol but ill call my ob and see what she recommends. My being sick isn't harming the baby at all right?
  • Nah, a cold won't bother the baby (not that I'm aware,... this is my second and I have had colds with both).  But yeah, I'd just give your OB a call and see what he/she recommends.  I'm not a doc or a nurse, but I swear that having little to no sleep while sick only makes it so much harder to recover so don't get to that point.  It wasn't until I was getting some good sleep in that I started to feel better/get over the cold.

  • Zicam is a godsend.  Clears up your nose lickety-split.

Nope. Not something like allergies, the baby should be fine :) but if you get a fever then it's important to not let it get too high. Like PP said you really should talk to your doc, they can answer all of your questions and give you advice on what to do.

  • Arm & hammer simply saline is safe for pregnancy (even says it on the bottle) and works well to clear out my sinuses to make me feel better quicker. I used it the last time I was stuffy and couldn't find my netti pot.
