Welcome to the Budgeting and Saving check-in. This is a personal topic, feel free to give dollar amounts or not, or to skip any questions you do not want to answer.
Hearing about the goals you are all working towards last week was such an inspiration for me, I hope we can keep this going.
1. What is your budgeting/savings goal? How close are you to completing it?
2. What are you doing this week to help you reach your goal? What are you proud of?
3. Pick one budgeting or money saving tip to share with everyone.
4. How do you keep track of your spending and saving?
5. Any budgeting/finance question you would like to ask the group?
GTKY: How would you rate your personal finance knowledge (including
knowledge about both debt/budgeting and managing wealth i.e. investments)?

2. What are you doing this week to help you reach your goal? What are you proud of? Last week was so busy I didn't have a chance to send out those resumes. I need to get back on track this week. DD needed some fall clothes and I'm trying to only use up gifts cards and not spend any cash on them. Spent $0 on eating out so far this month!
3. Pick one budgeting or money saving tip to share with everyone. Take inventory of your gift cards and try to spend them instead of cash.
4. How do you keep track of your spending and saving? Mint.com
5. Any budgeting/finance question you would like to ask the group?
GTKY: How would you rate your personal finance knowledge (including knowledge about both debt/budgeting and managing wealth i.e. investments)? 7/10 I feel very knowledgeable about saving and budgeting, but know nothing about managing wealth/investing. I want to learn more, but everything I read goes over my head. We have some savings sitting in a GIC and I want to do more with it, but don't know where to start.
I found out yesterday that my husband may be out of a job by the end of the week so I'm a little stressed right now. We would temporarily halt our contributions to savings, college and retirement, cut back on more non -essentials and add him to my health insurance. We could swing it while he looks for something else.
I guess the tip would be to have an emergency fund in place to cover expenses in case someone (or both) loses their job. We have one and we've been saving most of his income so this hit (if it comes) won't leave us on the street.
I had an eye-opening moment when I realized that being on maternity leave in Canada is the same thing as living on unemployment for a year. It gave me some confidence that we could manage (temporarily) if we experience job loss.
We want to get out of debt, pay off the car, before purchasing another. We haven't really started paying extra on the car yet.
2. What are you doing this week to help you reach your goal? What are you proud of?
This week I finally tithed for last month, and really trying not to eat out. (I haven't yet.)
3. Pick one budgeting or money saving tip to share with everyone.
We used to only take out so much cash each month that we could spend, we haven't done that in a while and we are still getting used to our new pay days. But only having $400 for food was really good and kept us strict on our budget.
4. How do you keep track of your spending and saving?
Right now I don't. DH also has another account, once we switch everything over to his account we will be able to better budget I think.
5. Any budgeting/finance question you would like to ask the group?
I can't get a handle on birthday/wedding/gifts for people. How can I equally budget it and be consistent. Like I didn't get my dad a birthday present, but I got him an awesome father's day present!
GTKY: How would you rate your personal finance knowledge (including knowledge about both debt/budgeting and managing wealth i.e. investments)?
Getting rid of student loan debt. 4 years.
2. What are you doing this week to help you reach your goal? What are you proud of?
I'm still biking or running to work everyday, which is saving on gas and parking or bus fare. I'm hoping I can keep it up for awhile still as the weather gets colder.

I think I'm pretty solid on the debt/budgeting end of things. Going to school for 10 years and then having to keep living like a grad student while I pay back loans has been good practice in the fine art of being broke. Wealth management isn't something I've gotten too into yet, as there's not much for me to manage. :-)
I am generally pretty cheap with gifts, just do cards for birthdays & mothers/fathers days unless I know there's something someone would really appreciate. When we have a family wedding I always ask my parents if it will be a "family gift" i.e. my parents will also sign our names on their card. I have no shame, and often my parents are calling me to tell me its a family gift. When I want to get someone a nice gift I try to find someone to split the cost with, usually my sister or a friend. A $50 gift from 2 people looks a lot nicer than 2 $30 gifts.
