Massively failed my 1 hour glucose test

I just talked to my OB office and I massively failed my 1 hour glucose test with a 181. I limited carbs and sugar 12 hours before.  Has anyone else failed their 1 hour that bad and passed the 3 hour?

I found this chart and thought it was interesting....it's from 96, so not sure how accurate it still is:

One-Hour Screening Result Percentage of Women Diagnosed With GD
140-145 mg/dl 18% had gd
146-150 mg/dl 20% had gd
151-155 mg/dl 30.5% had gd
156-160 mg/dl 34% had gd
161-165 mg/dl 34.4% had gd
166-170 mg/dl 29% had gd
171-175 mg/dl 45% had gd
176-180 mg/dl 55% had gd
181-185 mg/dl 41% had gd
186-190 mg/dl 67% had gd
191-195 mg/dl 67% had gd
196-200 mg/dl 64% had gd
201-225 mg/dl 85% had gd
226+ mg/dl
100% had gd

The lab tech told me to fast for 12 hours before. I've read that you should carb load 3 days prior to testing (I am going in Friday or Monday for the test).

Any words of wisdom ladies? Feeling like a sucky mom already today! I just want to cry and MH doesn't understand at all.

(I am sure this has been on the board before, but I searched and I think it came up with a post from every month but D14).

Re: Massively failed my 1 hour glucose test

  • I had a 169 on my 1 hour glucose test and just took the 3 hour test this morning. I'm anxiously waiting for the results. I bawled my eyes out when they called the first time and told me my blood sugar was high. I felt the same way you did... Like a horrible mommy already. Fingers crossed for good news!!

  • I ate very low glycemic for three days prior and only protein the day of.

  • Definitely take some sort of high-carby snack for immediately after the last blood draw (I took bananas since they're high on the glycemic index) and go eat lunch right away.

I hope you all pass, but if you don't, we started a GD thread this week, just FYI.

  • You should be eating normally the days leading up to the test.  The 3 hour is fasting, so no food within 12 hours.  You really don't want to cheat the test.  There are complications that you want to catch if you DO have it that far outweigh how crappy it is to restrict your diet.

That said, I failed the one hour for both of my pregnancies and opted to just keep track of my diet and sugars using a meter instead of taking the 3 hour.  My dietitian is convinced I would have passed the 3 hour.  No matter how high I get my readings at one hour, by two hours they're perfectly normal.  My fasting has never been high, either.

There was a girl in a facebook group who failed the one hour and passed the three only to find out that she really did have it when she went into early labor and delivered a stillborn.  Totally rare but it's a good example of why you'd want to catch it if you really do have it.

  • I failed the one hour so miserably that my doctor skipped the 3 hour and diagnosed me based on my 1 hour result (224), so you shouldn't feel so bad.  Plus I was only 12 weeks when they tested me, so I've been dealing with the GD for 6 months now.  Good luck with your 3-hr!

  • I took my test on Monday morning and passed. I ate like I normally would on Saturday and Sunday but Sunday I stopped eating around 8pm night. I "fasted" for 12 hours but I snuck in two pieces of cheese before I left the house, I didn't want to pass out on my drive to the lab.

  • Personally I wouldn't do anything to try to get better results and I don't really think it would matter what you did at this point anyways.  If you have it, you want to know.  I'm not sure where you will be taking the test or if they have wifi but I would bring your laptop or a really good book.  It's a long 3 hours when you are starving, shaky, and irritable.  All I wanted was a huge glass of ice water and a cheeseburger.
Oh I definitely don't want to cheat the test! If I have it, I want to know asap so that I can start monitoring for LO's safety. It is so out of our control which is the hard part. I eat well 80% of the time and work out regularly. It was a shock to see I failed it so bad, but I guess my body is doing its pregnancy-hormonal thing!

  • My OB told me to eat an extra piece of bread for three days before the test and then fast the night before. Ask your OB how she wants you to take it. At the lab, the tech said to not drink water the first hour, bc it can dilute the drink and give a false positive. Let's hope I pass!

Agree with this. I had GD with my DD. You definitely want to know if you have it. And there is nothing you can really do about it. There are definitely risk factors, but people who are perfectly healthy, eat well, exercise regularly, no family history, etc, can still get it because it is about how the placenta affects the insulin. So nothing can really change it, and it is definitely not your fault or anything you did/could have done differently.
Thank you for saying this! It makes me feel like I'm not such a sucky mom after all! :)<3

  • Co worker of mine failed the one hour with 132, still had to do the three hour and had GD, I just found out I failed with a 138, so I have to take it. I pray I pass the three hour test, but GD does run in my family. :( Sister had with her second and my mom did with a few off her pregnancies.
  • Right there with you just got the call I didn't want. Failed with 191 :( Monday we'll find out more.

  • @Anna930 Feel free to kiss ass away! :D

Since this is my third round of GD/type II, there's not much I haven't tried in terms of tests, diets, etc. I've been lucky that I haven't had to do insulin, but I was on glyburide for both girls and will most likely start it tomorrow.

Information is the key, and figuring out how you can still enjoy some treats without elevating your sugars.

  • I got the call yesterday that I failed my three hour- however I am scheduled for a 2hr. instead of 3? Weird everyone keeps saying 3.

Pregnancy GTT uses a 1-hour and 3-hour. I have never heard of a 2 hour for pregnancy. I have had the 2 hour many times in my life, due to hypoglycemia.

As for OP, lots of people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. I majorly failed the 1 hour and passed the three because my body isn't good at the one hour but eventually within the 3 hours, catches  up where it should be. Don't worry just yet. Don't do anything to skew you results (either way). If you have GD, let it get dealt with. if you don't, don't eat a pack of skittles before going in and make it look like you do. Not saying you did either, but I am just using a comparison. I personally think you have a good chance of being just fine.

@amieeyoung‌ I took the 2 hour with both pregnancies. In fact, my current doctor requires all patients to take the 2hr. The drink is only 75g instead of 100g (1hr is 50g). So its easier on your system...and it takes an hour less:-) Either can be used to diagnosis gd.

  • Oh good :) I was getting worried ;)
  • I failed the 1 hour at 175!!! I took the 3 hour 1 week later and passed with no problem. I even ate sugary dessert the day before my 3 hour... It didn't matter. Many people fail the first one.
  • I failed my 1 hour at 161. Took my 3 hour this morning. Crossing my fingers. Worst case scenario it's positive and then at least we know and can care for baby right the rest of the pregnancy.

Exactly what Shell said - Gestational diabetes is NOT the same as Type II Diabetes. Type II Diabetes is related to diet, exercise, and weight (in general). Gestational diabetes has to do with your placenta blocking the production of insulin. So don't take it on yourself or feel like a bad mom, because it isn't that at all!

    -----QUOTE BOX FAIL-----

    Yes, but...

As you get to the 40-week mark, the placenta can start breaking down, flooding your system with the hormones that cause the insulin resistance. If you get enough of them, then it can cause you to become type II. This is why you don't get to go past your due date with GD. And yes, once you deliver the placenta, the hormones are gone and you are no longer GD, as long as your body hasn't already been compromised beyond repair.

Also, 60% of women who have GD develop type II within five years of the pregnancy. I don't know if it's a direct result of the GD or the fact that other lifestyle factors may come into play (or moms with GD already have an underlying insulin issue and the GD just exacerbates it). Regardless, that's what happened to me, developing type II 18 months after having DD2, and I have an underlying insulin issue to boot (PCOS).

So yes, GD is not the same as type II. And most of the time the placenta is the evil part of the equation. But just make sure you and your doctor keep on top of monitoring you even a couple of years after delivery.

  • @bowlwoman that's scary but good to know. I just can't wait to know for sure one way or the other. I will just skip this stupid 1 hour test if I ever have another kid.

  • @blessdtxas‌ I never took a 1 hr, so I don't know if my doctor didn't order it during my mother two pregnancies or if the fact they were 6 and 8 years ago means the protocols changed duringn that time. I didn't take it this time, sono suppose I'll never know.

  • I had GD with my first.  Barely failed the one hour and then failed the 3 hour. I bombed the one hour with my second and passed the 3 hour.  I go in for the 3 hour this Friday with my 3rd, and I hope to pass.
