He latched! But the pain was terrible

So my LO latched last night for the first time trying on our own (sans lactation consultant). However, while his latch was strong and his sucking was great (this was a problem before) the pain was so intense I had to stop him. My nipple hurt for 45 minutes afterward. My nipples are cracked (I have been pumping for 3 weeks). My LO was in NICU and only just started eating from a bottle normally a week ago.

I want to nurse but I am not sure if this level of pain in normal. What do I do?!

Re: He latched! But the pain was terrible

  • Ugh, nipple pain is awful.  Are you using anything on them?  EBAM nipple butter was my best friend in the beginning until my nipples healed got used to all the feedings.  It's normal to have some pain for the first 30-60 seconds but it shouldn't hurt that bad for the entire time.  That's an indication that something is wrong.  Can you continue to work with a lactation consultant?  They will be able to let you know what's going on, evaluate there's nothing else going on (i.e. tongue tie) and give you some tips, strats and different holds to try.  GL!
