Celexa?(spelling??) sorry kinda long

I was on a generic form of celexa for anxiety/depression but stopped taking them in June. My doctor had put me on it temporarily due to the situation which is irrelevant to this question. I was going to go back on it cuz it really seemed to help with my mood but then I found out I was pregnant. I asked my ob about taking it yesterday. The nurse said it was a class c drug and they usually don't allow them. But when the ob came in she said where there hasn't been a direct link to any deformities/issues with unborn babies they would allow it because the good it does out weighs the bad it 'might' do. I just want to know if anyone has taken this and what the outcome was?

  • Newer Antidepressants, specifically citalopram (Celexa), are commonly used in pregnancy. They have never been shown to cause any physical defects, although long term effects on cognition are unclear. There are, however, very well documented risks of untreated depression in the mother. Your nurse was absolutely correct that you and your doctor must weigh the benefits of treating your depression against the minimal, if unknown, risks of the medication. I have several personal friends who have continued their Celexa in pregnancy and have healthy, intelligent children. As a pharmacist, I also see it used in practice regularly.

  • Thanks. I guess I just wanted to hear some positive feed back on it.

I'm actually a psychiatrist, and while I would never give you medical advice over the internet, I can tell you that Celexa, Zoloft, and Prozac are all considered safer than untreated depression or anxiety during pregnancy. I prescribe them to pregnant women fairly often.
