GMC Acadia

We are looking at new cars for me. We have it narrowed from about 20 vehicles we've looked at down to GMC Acadia, Ford Explorer, or Toyota Highlander. I love the Acadia so far, and am now at the point where I'm trying to find the bad because so far it seems too good to be true. Our main requirement is that the RF car seat (NextFit) must fit behind DH who is 6'1". We have sat in and played around with the Explorer, but not gone on a test drive yet. The Highlander we haven't seen in person, but we are going to do that when DH gets off of work today.

We are hesitant about the Explorer because of the touch-screen system it has to control climate/radio/everything else. We are worried about it being a distraction and prefer buttons and knobs for things like the a/c.

Highlander we haven't looked at in person yet so we don't even know if it makes the DH/car seat test.

Does anyone have an Acadia? How do you like it?

Re: GMC Acadia

  • I don't have an Acadia. I do think they are Cute :)
My sis has had the highlander for about three years she got it not long before her son was born. It is a great car. Sis, mom, DN, DS ( and their 2 britax) and I go out in it on day long trips all the time. Also holds 2 strollers, small cooler, 2 diaper bags and a days worth of shopping bags(including toys from granny) :)
Have fun looking for a car. I hope you find something you love.

  • I have an Acadia and I love it. We have 3 kids, 2 car seats and a booster seat in it. My LO is RF behind my husband and we don't have a problem. The trunk is a little small but you can lower 3 row seats easily.
  • Thanks!

@salemkitty13 We looked at the Highlander today and it doesn't have near as much room as the Acadia. The 3rd row was very small and cramped. I barely fit back there and I'm 5'3". The options we'd want (including leather seats) aren't available without the sunroof and DH didn't fit in it with the sunroof, so the Highlander is a no-go for us. DH liked it more than I did. I didn't even want to test-drive it.

@heathermc78 We found the Acadia has plenty of space. I really like it, but have to get DH on board. He would look forever and ever, like we did with houses. In two months, we looked at over 200 houses and our house now three times before we settled on it. We have looked at between 20 and 30 cars in the past couple of weeks. Some we've gone to see in person and some not based on the specs on the websites and video reviews.

@redfallon‌ that sounds exactly like my DH! He takes forever to make a decision, it has to be perfect ;)
  • @redfallon I hope you get your DH on board soon. We will definitely look at the Acadia when we go to get DH a car later in the year. :)
  • I have a Ford Explorer and love it but I'm not sure how DD's seat would fit behind thee drivers. We keep it on the passenger side. But wanted to comment that my SIL bought a new Pilot and trade it in for a minivan after only a year and a half because my brother had trouble fitting in with a forward facing seat. The minivan has so much room and it has all the extras. DH hates minivans but I'm thinking they may be the way to go if you have more than 1 kid.
  • We can't go with a minivan. We need something that has off-road capability and more ground clearance than a minivan.

We also really do not like minivans ;)

  • @Af1004‌ I agree about the minivans :) maybe that's why DH keeps saying we are one and done

I do not own one, but I am also in the market. I like how it has captains chairs in the 2nd row so that you don't have to do gymnastics to get into the 3rd. I wish more SUVs offered this! I test drove an Escalade and felt like I was driving a bus (same with Tahoe/Suburban/etc) but smaller SUVs like the Q7 and MDX have such small back seats and you access them by folding the second row. That's hard to do when you have two car seats in that row. Good luck!

  • We tested all the ones we saw with DH in the driver's seat and Emily's seat behind him to make sure that we don't have a problem with it. It fits the same if he was in the passenger seat. That's to make sure if/when we have two babies, that we can all fit. In my Jetta, the car seat cannot fit behind him, so that's a problem if we have another baby.
