Loud Tasks w/ LO?

I'm curious if you guys are doing things like blow drying your hair & vacuuming when it's just you & LO? If so, are you keeping them at a distance or what? Or are you waiting for SO to be home to watch LO? I manage to get a shower most days but I have yet to blow dry my hair & I'm sick of wearing wet up-dos all day! :-( Or maybe I'm going overboard. I just assume it's too loud?

  • My understanding is that babies love those sounds, it reminds them of the sounds of the womb. The only sound Nico has seemed to mind was my superpowered blender, which woke him up one day. Vacuums, showers, bathroom fans, all good so far.

  • His swing is in the living room and he hears everything in the kitchen and I've vaccumed with him in the same room. I know every baby is different but it didn't upset him at all, he might jump a bit but he's good(he's usually awake too) I say try it and see how it goes, they have to get use to it eventually right

  • I actually don't do either but that's just coincidence. My hair is too long and thick to blow dry, it takes too long. And we have all hardwood floors. That said, I do loud tasks with baby all the time. I have a 7 year old and an 19 month old — it's NEVER quiet. I probably wouldn't baby wear while blow drying, but putting baby in a swing or bounce chair nearby isn't a problem.

It's actually a really good idea to make noise around babies to make them less sensitive to noises and wake ups. (Granted, this doesn't work with all babies. My son wakes up if someone sneezes. Luckily, he's a great sleeper and had always been able to fall back asleep.)

  • Yeah, I do all that stuff. I also have a 2 year old that runs around like crazy. I actually wished I would have made more noise when my 2 year old was a baby.

  • Yes, I just sit her in the bouncer during both those things. Also, with the crazy toddler screaming her head off and smacking her blocks together.

  • LO loves the sound of both
  • Yep, she actually seems quite content when I'm doing both of those things.

  • Yup! She either sleeps through it or just watches. I vaccumm with her asleep all the time. I would rather not tip toe around and create a easy waker forever. I go completely about my day. Washer dryer dishwasher shower blow dry vaccumm TV music. All same levels they were before.

This exactly. I go about my day doing everything at the same volume I always have. If he's tired he sleeps through it all. If he's awake he finds it interesting or tunes it out - depending on his mood.

  • I've actually held DS twice while dying my hair. He was in his bouncer with me in the bathroom but was fussy so I picked him up.
  • I don't do either of them but mainly bc I don't blow dry my hair or vacuum. I shower at night and sleep on wet hair and DH vacuums usually while I am nursing in another room. But I have a toddler and she is not the least bit quite so he has to deal with that. He does really well unless she is directly in his face.

  • I decided to vacuum the other day because LO was awake and in a good mood. He was just chilling on the couch. I looked over a few minutes later and he was sound asleep. I think he liked it :))

  • I have blow dried my hair, vacuumed, and put dishes away (lots of clanging). We also have a dog that barks at passerby, falling leaves, squirrels...DD has been just fine. I want her to be used to it being noisy during the day!

  • I've been vacuuming, watching tv, etc while she's sleeping. I've heard this makes them better sleepers because every little noise doesn't wake them up. We did same with my son and he's a good sleeper.

  • My baby loves those sounds. I blow dry my hair with him in the room every day and I run the sweeper all the time. I actually turned on the vacuum for him the other day when he was having a melt down and it calmed him down and he fell asleep while it was still running.
