United Healthcare and Birth Control

Anyone else with UHC think their pharmacy benefits are crap? I go today to refil a generic prescription (just changed insurance last month), happily thinking I'll have better coverage than my last insurance and I'll pay maybe $15. $29 later I call them and because it falls into a "tier 2", I have to pay up to $35 for the refill. Yet, a brand name, much more expensive birth control on their site can apparently be filled for free. (???) Someone explain how this makes any sense?

This is mostly a rant. But feel free to add any complaints about your own insurance...or make all of us hate you if your insurance is wonderful  :)

Re: United Healthcare and Birth Control

  • Was your script for bc? Under the aca, birth control is supposed to be available without a copay.

We had uhc and they were awful in pretty much every way. We have cigna now and they're somewhat better, but I still miss my municipal blue cross I had when I was on my mom's plan, they covered everything!

  • Apparently after more investigation, UHC (and most other healthcare plans thanks to ACA) are on a tier plan. Where for different ranges of cost you pay different copay limits. It was for a generic bc. Weird thing is when I looked up Ortho Tri Cyclen (Brand name I'm pretty sure), it was listed as free. So that's what doesn't make sense. I'll probably call them tomorrow to clarify. Only been on this stuff for 2 months so unless it messes me up switching, I say it's worth it if it's really free.

We had pretty good insurance when I used to work, only they are a private religious affiliation so they were able to "excuse" themselves from covering birth control. I already miss them in other ways though. We used to pay $90 for a 70/30 plan with dental coverage. Now we pay $230/month for 80/20 but higher co-pays for drs, and through the roof for specialists, ER and urgent care.
  • Yeah, I get it. Sorry, I like to think I'm fairly educated in insurance, but some of this is still foreign to me, espeically with all the changes in the last year or two. I found a list of specific names (brand name or generic) that my insurance will cover. Just weird that some name brands are covered, others you have to get specific generic of. Like you said @elf828  I'm sure it's all negotiation status. We don't plan to have another one for a few years so getting it for free definitely helps the bank for a long term prescription.

We pay $900/month for a decent plan, but it is very expensive, the plan is grandfathered and doesn't need to follow ACA guidelines. I hear ya on the costs!
