Just lost mucus plug at 31 weeks, should I be concerned?

A little background info- I'm 31 weeks and due November 27th 2014, This is my first pregnancy, I have no existing health problems and I am a healthy 18 year old girl. I've had no problems, take my prenatal vitamins and I'm vegetarian. How ever today while going to the bathroom (tmi sorry) a long stringy clear discharge came out, it looked different than the one that you normally get, lukerria or what ever it's called, it wasn't much, just one long stringy white piece that looked like semen or a slug, my partner and I had intercourse the day before yesterday and things were sore down there and when I wiped I've had some dark discoloration, not quite bloody though, is this normal? I've been so stressed out lately and afraid of going into preterm labor, is it just from sex that it came out? Or should I be concerned? I'm supposed to be moving tomorrow and won't have a doctor yet.

  • Your mucous plug can regenerate, if you did lose part of it.  But I'm not sure from your description if you did.  Who have you been seeing for your prenatal care?  Do you have no doctor at all that you can call?  I think you need to get a professional opinion - they may want to bring you in for a cervical check to make sure you aren't dilating.

Do you have any other signs of preterm labor - cramping, back pain, feeling like you have diarrhea, etc?  If not, you're probably fine, but honestly, I think you need to call an OB or MW.

  • I've had really bad back pain off and on, I was even crying it was so bad, this was a few days ago.
  • Go to the hospital please and get checked
  • Before you go off running into the ER call your OB.  You can loose your plug several times.
  • Like someone has already mentioned - the mucous plug -does- regenerate, I lost mine once after a fall at 33 weeks last pregnancy and then it regenerated somewhat, or maybe I just lost the rest of it, but anyway, point it, is does.

In my case, there -was- concern because I was dilating and that wasn't good, but it was due to placental abruption because of the fall.

So basically, it'd be a good idea to notify your doctor for sure and possibly get checked out, but on the other hand, don't worry too much since just because you've lost some doesn't mean you lost it all and does't mean it won't regenerate.
