Diaper Rash

DD has had it for a few days, probably close to a week now. Have tried Aquaphor, Buttpaste, and Saturday we started Desitin. It looks better since starting Desitin, but it seems like it has stalled clearing up. I'm putting it on after every diaper change while trying to keep her dry as possible. If it isn't better by the end of the week, I'm calling the pedi. Any suggestions?

Re: Diaper Rash

  • Try triple paste? Also, baking soda baths help, or epsome salts. And lots of air time.

  • Oh, and Desitin max works much better than regular Desitin. :)

  • We haven't had to deal with diaper rash yet, but once or twice a day, I slather her bottom in Vaseline and that seems to be helping her.
  • I know they don't recommend powder so much anymore. But I use it on LO in the night My mom said powder with corn starch was the ONLY thing that cleared our rashes. Maybe its worth a try.
  • Are you sure it's not a fungal rash? Diaper cream does nothing for those, but you can treat with over-the-counter anti-fungal cream like athlete's foot cream. Might be worth a try. Do a Google image search for thrush rash for some ideas of what a fungal rash looks like.
  • Try this recipe for your own triple paste: equal parts Desitin and anti-fungal cream like Lotramin AF then add enough Maalox to make it a consistency that you like. This is essentially the recipe for triple paste from a hospital except they have prescription anti-fungal. It works like magic on everything. Except DS2 was too sensitive to use baby wipes on so it didn't work on that.

Burt's Bees paste and naked air time helped a stubborn rash my LO had.

  • I've stopped using wipes, and that's helped tremendously; except we were away from the house all day on Saturday, so I used sensitive wipes... well, now her red bum is back. :(

I just use plain tissues and spray water onto them.  I also slather her bum in either Aquaphor or Vaseline, especially when I start to see some redness.
