Milk supply decrease?

Hi all - My Toad will be 9 months old tomorrow. This week my milk supply has decreased. I did change my diet recently (cut out sugar and processed foods) but I have a hard time thinking that a healthy change like that would cause it. Anyway, at work I would typically pump and get 15-18oz a day. Then this week it's barely been 12oz. Toad has been eating more solids. Could this be the cause of my supply decrease - Toad is eating more solid food and thus eating less during nursing? Has anyone else had this happen? I'm not ready to stop nursing and I don't want my supply to dry up. I know I just need to follow his cues, etc and everything should regulate, but it just makes me nervous. Thoughts?

Re: Milk supply decrease?

  • No advice here, but I can relate. My DD is 9 months and I experienced a sudden drop in supply at 8 months pretty similar to your amounts. My parts are all OK and I doubt now that it's my period because it's been lower for 6 weeks now. I'm lead to believe DD is taking in more solids. I'm still putting in same amounts for DC bottles so I've had to dip into my freezer stash. I'm OK with it now because I realize this is just the slow progression of weaning. My supply has stayed relatively steady for the past 6 weeks though so I know I'm not "drying up".

  • Thanks for sharing, eggmankate ! Makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one.

I did chk calories and it seems as though I have made up for it and am getting plenty. I do have 'good' carbs daily so I'm pretty convinced that this decrease is not soley based on my diet change. I'm trying to add another pumping session a day and will see if that will perk things up. Thanks, all.
