Swollen Cervix & Progesterone Supplements?? Possibly TMI

Hi everyone, I have just been lurking so far on this board (having a hard time believing this pregnancy has been going well so far.  No spotting!  Yah!) and was going to wait until after my next u/s to introduce myself however, I have a question now that has popped up and hopefully someone can share some personal experience about.

I'm on 400mg of Prometrium (200mg twice a day) which I insert vaginally.  I am currently 8 weeks pregnant after 3 consecutive losses prior to 8 weeks and things seem to be going well thus far.  Have had two ultrasounds already and saw a good heartbeat at 6.5 weeks (although saw this with one of my previous losses as well).  Last night I inserted my suppositories with no issues and went to bed.  Sorry if this is TMI but normally I can insert them with one finger and that finger can push them back all the way to my cervix just barely.  This morning when I went to put them in suddenly I could only go in to my middle knuckle and there was a large hard rounded mass blocking the way.  The pills slipped around it however this has freaked me out as it was not there last night at all!  Is what I am feeling my cervix swollen for some reason?  I do have internal hemorrhoids and at first thought perhaps (as I had ensured to go to the bathroom before inserting the pills), that I was feeling one pushing through my vaginal wall.  However, it doesn't feel at all like it's protruding from the wall it feels separate from the wall and coming more from the direction of my cervix.  It doesn't hurt at all and I have no signs of a yeast infection or anything of that nature.  I have had several bouts of bad cell readings on my paps and have had uterine and cervical biopsies taken all of which have been negative for dysplasia despite the high grade reading on the paps.  So not sure if this could also have anything to do with this issue?  Also wondered if his is something that happens before a miscarriage and the progesterone has just stopped any bleeding from occurring?

Has anyone experienced anything like this?  It is of course Saturday so I can't call my doctor to ask.  I have an appointment booked on Monday already with my OB for another ultrasound and will obviously ask him then but a bit worried right now.  Thoughts??   Thanks in advance for any comments.

ETA:  Sorry I should also note that due to the multiple losses and the progesterone supplements my doctor has put me on pelvic rest as a precaution, so I've not had sex or any type of stimulation since finding out at 3.5 weeks.

  • Have you gone to the bathroom recently? I was also taking progesterone supps vaginally during first Tri. I was also super constipated. I found that if I was having a particularly constipated day, it was harder to get the supplement all the way in.

  • I use the plastic applicator to put mine in. Some days it is easy, some days I have to twist it around a little to (gently) get it in it's place. I never thought much about it :) seems normal to me. See if it disappears again
  • Hi ladies, thanks for the responses.  Mine didn't come with an applicator, was just told use my fingers!  These do make me more constipated than normal but I did have a bm right before hand but doesn't mean that isn't still what is affecting it for sure.

Had a shower and checked again and while it still doesn't feel normal it doesn't feel quite as swollen as this morning either.  I guess just cross my fingers that it's nothing and goes away until I can see the doctor on Monday!

  • @Hawkward‌ you had a reaction to the vag supps right? Was it anything like this?

My only thought would be a buildup of the prometrium. I know not all of it gets absorbed, but I'm not sure where the hardness would come from in this scenario from though.

I had the allergic like reaction to the supps. It was terrible but really an external issue (the supps and pantyliners gave me terrible chaffing that resulted in cuts :( )versus the internal swelling OP describes.

  • THanks for the answers everyone.  Unfortunately, ultrasound showed no heartbeat.  Seems it stopped about a week ago.  I was too distressed to remember to ask about the swelling cervix so I'll ask later in the week after my D&C.  I appreciate the responses though.

  • I am not on that particular kind of progesterone but I do use suppositories. If i'm understanding you correctly, I have two guesses: 1) You have to have a bm. TMI If you feel the back wall, you can feel if you have to have a bm. It's also common for progesterone to cause constipation, which can also lead to that theory. 2) It was your actual cervix. I can tell you from experience that your cervix does all kinds of crazy stuff during pregnancy. Sometimes, it can be rock hard and low.

I would assume that it is normal but it is always safe to call your OB anyway. If there is anything i've learned in pregnancies, everything "normal" seems like it should be completely NOT normal. The further you get, the more wacky it all gets.
