Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Intro and sleep position question

Hi all popping over from the J14 board. My LO will be 4 months on Saturday! Question is regarding his favorite sleep position: on his tummy. I know that it is not recommended but he hates being on his back. We actually get sleep when he is on his tummy. We bed share as well which is another strike against our set up. I am not a heavy sleeper and wake up several times a night to make sure he is breathing and nothing is blocking his airway.

Does anyone else have a LO who insists on tummy sleeping? Anyone have advice about getting him on his back?

Re: Intro and sleep position question

  • Can he roll over to his belly on his own? Our pedi says that once they can roll over on their own, it's ok to let them sleep on their belly. So I always put her down on her back, and if she chooses to roll to her belly (which she always does now), I let her sleep that way. We also have an Angelcare monitor for extra peace of mind, but that obviously won't work if you bed share.

  • We switched our first child to her tummy at about two months, but she was in her crib with nothing else. For me it would depend on your cosleeping setup.

  • LO has been taking naps on her belly for the last month and a half but i still lay her down on her back for bedtime.....she actually takes better naps on her belly :)
  • My LO started rolling over to sleep on his tummy at about 4 months, so now I just put him down that way.  He definitely sleeps much better.
  • My DS (5 months) is a belly sleeper, but while we bed share he's either on his back or his side. He starts the night off on his side and then ends up on his back. Now that he rolls over both ways, I've began the crib transition and he frequently ends up belly down while in his crib
  • My baby was sleeping on her tummy ever since we got home from the hospital, swaddling wouldnt work for a while so on her tummy kept her from wiggling and waking herself up, we checked on her alot at first.

she was alone in the bassinet/crib and she had really strong head muscels (she'd hold her head up from birth!) so while sleeping on her tummy she would turn her head from one side to the other with no problem, then we went back to swaddling at night at around 3 weeks of age and she would sleep on her back, naps without a swaddle and on her tummy and recently (3 weeks or so) she sleeps on her back but doesnt wiggle out of control so she weaned off the swaddle and sleeps on her back. But she sleeps alone with nothing in the crib.
