Could you live without sugar?

I have been sugar free for 21 days as of this morning.  I have lost about 6 lbs and feel amazing!  I have stayed within My Fitness Pal's daily sugar allowance, but that has to be natural sugars and nothing added.  I switched Peanut butters, spaghetti sauce, and bread.  I have limited milk, plain yogurt, fruit and carbs each day.  I have been eating a lot of lean meats and vegetables.

That said, we are going on a road trip this weekend and I will totally go off track for a couple days.  I don't see the sense in making and effort to eat great when I will be drinking.  Now to have a PSL Friday before we go or not.....

Thanks, it is such a hard addiction though.  After 3 freakin' weeks, I was dreaming about putting a teaspoon of sugar on my cereal (I haven't even been eating cereal!).

  • I would probably go through withdrawals.  Headaches and feel yucky at first.   It's hard because it's added in everything.  It's so bad for me though, I know it's my main downfall in my diet.  I'm a pretty healthy eater otherwise.

  • Could I? Yeah.

    Would I want to? Nope.

    Pretty much this :)

  • Nope. Says I who had my usual coffee with 3 tsp,. of sugar, along with pancakes with non-real maple syrup followed by a slice of apple pie for breakfast this morning.

  • Yes, we have done something similar.  If we have sugary treats they have to be ones we make.  I don't buy processed crap.  Are we 100% over it? No, but I try really hard not to buy foods with added sugar.  At least if we are making our own brownies I know everything that's in them :)  I don't get too hung up on it when we are oot though, it's just too hard.  Although dh and I agree, we don't even really like half the stuff we eat when we are away from home, it's too sweet or processed most of the time.

So what do you do when you go out to eat for dinner?  Or have you not gone out at all.
We don't eat out much honestly.  When we go out, we tend to eat at nicer places where we can get grilled chicken/fish and fresh veggies.  Eatting fast food makes our stomachs hurt and has made dd1 throw up more than once because the food is too rich for her.  I have zero problem ordering a nice dessert though if the rest of my meal has been good.

But all restaurants are adding sugar to their foods because of flavor.  Every single item on a menu has a marinade or a glaze or spice rub, etc.
Even salads you have to watch.
True, I guess I don't worry about it too much in that area.  I can't honestly tell you the last restaurant we ate out at though so there's that.

  • Nope. I take it pretty easy on the processed foods but I need sugar in my morning coffee.

  • Can you live without air? I'm a total sugar freak. I should really work on that...
  • Nope, it is too prevalent.  I tried doing it for awhile, but it is not something I can maintain for a lifetime. Plus I was always starving because I was too lazy to make anything, most prepackaged food have sugar, and I cannot eat most convenience vegetables without some sort of dip.

  • I wish I could. I know that I could drop the weight a lot faster if I did. I really really love sugar though.

  • I stay within my allowances most days. But there are some days where the cravings win :(
  • Nope! The day I learned that sugar is vitally important for those with conditions like diabetes (even though I do not have it or the pre version) was the day I came to terms that the reality is about moderation. I cut out artificial sweeteners and have noticed an overall change there (I had a lot of metabolic syndrome issues and it really was true in my case that the artificial sweeteners mess with you more than actual sugar whether natural, processed cane/beet, or honey does).  The biggest shift with that is the moderation, I don't drink 3-5 cans of diet soda a day anymore, I have maybe one of "real sugar" soda (honey sweetened or cane sugar sweetened) because of wanting the fizzy experience, but that's it, satisfied, no white knuckling it which ultimately leads to failure..  Those who take weight off and keep it off for the long term eat sugar in its various forms, it's just in moderation, and when you've satisfied the craving in the first place, you end up consuming fewer calories overall.

  • Yes, I can, and I've been living with minimal sugar and carbs since June and am down 36 pounds so far. BUT I can't live without artificial sweetener, and I know that's a hot topic of debate. Controlling my sugar and carbohydrate intake is seriously the only way I've found to keep a handle on my overall eating issues - moderation works for some people, but it's proven to be impossible for me thus far.

I could but I don't think life would be the same without brown sugar in my coffee and desserts! I'm all about everything in moderation.

Wait. You put brown sugar in your coffee? How's that taste. I've never heard of that.

It's just how I've always made my coffee. It just has a more caramel-ish taste to me I guess? Lately I've been doing pumpkin spice coffee, brown sugar, and a vanilla creamer. Heaven!

I also use brown sugar when I make my own pasta sauce. It pairs really well with tomatoes and garlic. Just a little but it goes a long way.

I'm about due for another cup of coffee. I shall try this! I usually just pour an unreasonable amount of creamer in my coffee.
  • Black coffee FTW!

Just had to come in here to say that :D

  • Wow, that is awesome @Arnegard

I'm not sure. I know I can limit sugar but probably not long term.

  • I have been trying to do this for the last couple weeks. I have definitely cut down on my sugar intake, but I literally dream about baked goods and chocolate. And as soon as I eat I immediately crave something sweet. It's like crack!  At this point I'm not sure I will be able to completely give up all the sugar and processed crap  :|

    WTG!!!!!  Use what works!

That was me for MANY years.  The important thing for the long term though is to keep an eye on things health wise in the negative direction and if you notice problems to adjust..

Nope I couldn't. It would be a big deal for me if I stopped eating desserts all together :)  BUT I need sugar in my coffee and tea.  Even a little teaspoon of it in my morning oatmeal.  I was able to loose a lot of weight by just cutting out all processed foods.  I tried artificial sweeteners and just couldn't take the aftertaste so I would still use real sugar.
