Baby Names

Aurora

We're two weeks away from finding out our baby's gender. We had chosen names, but I wasn't feeling 100% on the girl's name, therefore, DH and I are revisiting the subject.

My favorite girl's names are Aurora and Amelia. He has finally come around to at least discussing these as possibilities. I know a girl named Amelia and I asked her questions about whether or not she likes her name, etc. So, now I'm wondering if there is anyone out there named Aurora - do you like your name? Why or why not? What nicknames do you have? We're thinking of calling her Rory, if it's a girl and we choose Aurora (obviously).

Apparently I can't add a poll to the post, as well, but what are your thoughts/votes…(Maureen is my mom's name, therefore it will be our daughter's middle name).

Aurora Maureen
Amelia Maureen

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Aurora

  • I like the nickname Rory.
  • Loading the player...
  • Overall I like Aurora better but prefer Amelia with Maureen.
  • Love Aurora!! To me no nickname is needed but Rory isn't bad but you'll probably come up with another NN once she's born. My daughter is named Sabrina and I planned to call her Sabby or Brina as a NN. Honestly I love her name so much I always just use her first name. I think Aurora is similar to that.

BTW Amelia is pretty too but I think its way more popular than Aurora which makes me not like it as much anymore.
  • This is hard because I really like Aurora and Amelia. If I had to choose I think I very slightly prefer Amelia Maureen. They are both so pretty.

  • I love both but I love Aurora more

  • Thank you, ladies!! See the dilemma, we love them both as well. It's hard to decide.
  • I know a little Aurora. She is still young but her parents love her name still after three years. However, I saw her a few weekends ago and introduced her to my best friend's three year old. She kept asking her what her name was and she kept saying Aurora. I finally stepped in and said it slow for my BFF's daughter and she refused to believe that Aurora is a name. Aurora was starting to get upset. Three year old drama.

  • I love Amelia.  Aurora is to hard to pronounce, I think.
  • I love Aurora but I feel like my mouth fumbles over it awkwardly.. (same with Rory) I don't think most people have this issue though lol.

  • They are both great names! I think I would choose Aurora.

Have you ever seen the name Aurelia? It pretty much combines both Aurora and Amelia.
  • They are both pretty! I have a friend named Emilia and I love her name. Flows better than Amelia IMO but people often confuse it with Amelia. I agree with PP that Aurora is kind of a mouthful for kids.
This signature is all for YOU. I'm on mobile and can't see crap.

  • I wouldn't use either Aurora or Aurelia because we have towns with those names within 10 Mon of our house. IMHO the nickname Rory is masculine and sounds awwwwful. Rora isn't so bad. I like Amelia best.

  • I like Aurora better, but agree with PP that it's a mouthful and hard for kids to say.  Amelia is pretty, too, just a little more popular.
  • I had a student named Aurora, and she is a lovely, sweet girl. I think it's beautiful!

  • I have a hard time wrapping my mouth around the Rs in Aurora for some reason. There was an Aurora in DD's swim class, her mom called her Rory a lot.
  • I am probably the minority here but Aurora isn't my style at all. I live in a city named Aurora, and it happens to be the one where the mass theater shooting was 2 years ago. So for me, I couldn't get past that #1 in my eyes it's a city, and #2, I associate it with something terrible.

IF I didn't have those references, I think I could love the name.

  • Absolutely love the name Aurora and the nn Rory. It would have been at the top of my list if I could pronounce the Rs well with my stutter.

  • I prefer Amelia.  I like the look of Aurora but I also have trouble saying it.  I said it out loud yesterday at Sam's Club (talking to DD about a book with Princess Aurora) and it sounded so weird coming out of my mouth that I looked around to see if anyone overheard.

  • Amelia Maureen is awesome!

Aurora Maureen isn't bad, but it doesn't flow as well.  Plus you get into difficult Disney Princess territory.
