My LO does not sleep!

He is 2 1/2 weeks and he hardly sleeps during the day, just fussy and will not stop crying unless he uses me as a pacifier. At night he might sleep 1 1/2 hour streaches but that's it. I keep reading newborns should sleep 18+ hours in a day. This kid gets maybe 8-9 hours total. Anyone else LO's not "sleeping like a baby"?

Re: My LO does not sleep!

  • My son is three weeks tomorrow and he sleeps usually ONE 3 hour stretch at night and during the day I'll be lucky if I get a solid hour or two, usually he sleeps in increments but is generally unhappy if he isn't eating. Someone (would credit the user if I could remember who it was) said newborns hit a growth spurt at 10 - 14 days, again at three weeks and another at I think six weeks. Which explains the constant feeding. He's happy and healthy, which if your LO is happy, healthy and dirtying and wetting the ideal number of diapers and isn't lethargic or anything then your child is fine.

Anyone who says children "should" get "x" amount of sleep is just stating it as an ideal for development, but really the infant decides. If your baby is eating a lot id say a growth spurt is happening. If you're truly concerned though speak to your dr.
