Momma Works the Swing Shift

With so many moms on our board returning to work it makes me realize that there are unique needs for those of is who work shift jobs or odd hours. Any restaurant, retail, hotel, medical, factory, emergency services or other shift working mommas out there?

What kind of hours do you work? Days/nights? Fixed or rotating schedule? How are you handling "day"care? How are you handling baby feeding? Are you still getting time with your SO?

Re: Momma Works the Swing Shift

  • DH and I both work 3-11:30, I started back on Thursday from my maternity leave. One of our coworkers wives is watching LO, seems to be going well so far except she now has her first cold after 2 days at the baby sitter. We are both still trying to get on day shift but have not been approved yet. The hardest part for me is someone else putting my baby to bed every night.

We are both in emergency services, so shift workers. We both work 7-7 days and nights. My maternity leave isn't over until June, but we are not sure what we will do for child care as of yet seeing as sometimes we both work nights or days on the weekends, however we have lots of time off throughout the week. May have to use vacation time when we are desperate.
  • @snuff9861‌ -- that's awesome that you are able to go back to school right now! I am an emergency RN and considered going back to school for my NP during my mat leave but thought it would be too crazy. Now that we have a bit of a routine going I think I could manage part-time. Good for you!
  • I work a regular office job, but my DH is firefighter and a paramedic on an ambulance and works crazy hours. Right now his shift is mostly night and weekend hours (12 and 24 hour shifts) so there is only one day a week that we need childcare and my mom is watching LO that day.

The down side is that we hardly ever see each other. Most days he leaves soon after I get home from work and comes home the next morning. He is gone almost the entire weekend with the exception of a few hours on Sunday. To be honest, I would rather have LO in daycare a few days a week and get to spend time as a family on the weekends, but right now we can't do that.

Ware also in the process of interviewing babysitters from the local university child care and nursing programs for the days where he needs to swap a shift or is called to work over time. We need to have a few backups that we can call since this is unpredictable and we don't have much advance notice.

  • @nickelnichol‌ I work the same rotation as you! What I'm most worried about is who will look after her on the night shifts especially on weekends :(
  • @frenchchocolate611‌ - we sound like we are in similar situations (or will be). When I'm back full-time in a few months, I will work 7-3. DH will then go to his job at a restaurant from 4 until whenever (I'll be in bed). It's nice that we don't have to pay for childcare but sucks at we are ships passing in the night 6 days a week. Then on Sunday, family and friends always want to see us because it's our only day off... But that's the thing, it's our only day off, and then we are in the awkward position of having to choose between our own family time and extended family obligations. Good times! Sorry, don't mean to get off topic!

  • Nursing school plus baby is amazing @snuff9861‌ . I am an associate degree RN, so I am currently taking the "step up" classes for my BSN (no clinicals) and will be done at the end of 2016. Hoping to start a dual MSN/MHA shortly thereafter.

I work in a progressive care / step down unit from 630-1900. It is the classic "three 12s" schedule with the commitment to work at least three weekend shifts a month. My husband has the typical M-F 8-5 work schedule.

After much debate we decided to schedule baby Noah into daycare three days a week. Some weeks we will need him there all three days, some weeks only one. Some days he'll go solely so that I can get my schoolwork done and graduate on time. Full time nurse, student and mom should be interesting...

Biggest sucky factor in all of this is that there will be times when Noah goes two full days without seeing me because I am working two in a row. Now that does break my heart!
  • @lest12 - I know exactly what you mean. DH is home for a few hours on Sunday and that is pretty much our only family time all week. However, the last three weeks my MIL has insisted on coming over/us going to her house on Sunday so she can see LO. I normally love my in laws, but this has really annoyed me now that I am back at work and don't get much time with DH and LO!

Retail here. 3 days a week I go in at either 8 or 9am and work until around 4. Two days a week I work the closing shift, which is noon until whatever time after close the store is in good enough condition for us to leave, which is usually between 8:30 and 9pm. Luckily, my mother is at my house Mon-Thur to watch LO. H and I have alternating Fridays and Saturdays off, and we both have Sunday off to spend together as a family. It's not all that bad.

ETA: I had to stop pumping/BFing because my supply was drying up and I could only pump about 1 1/2 to 2 oz per session and simply could not keep up. Exclusively formula now :(
