Breastfed Baby's Poop

I've talked about this in RTT, and a couple of ladies say their babies are the same way. But I just feel like this isn't normal! Baby girl's poop is thick and smells like adult poop. It's been this way for almost 2 months I would say (she's 5 months). She hasn't ever had anything but my BM, and my diet hasn't changed.

At her last appointment, the nurse practitioner we saw (she's seen a different person at every appointment) said that as babies get older, the enzymes in their gut change and digests differently, so it's normal. I'm not fully convinced though. She was straining really hard yesterday, and only a little bit of thick poop came out. She doesn't really seem to be in any pain or discomfort, but she's been grunting a lot.

Anyone else's EBF baby go through anything like this? Any suggestions?

  • Weird... :-?? I've thought "what if she's not getting enough foremilk?" but couldn't really find anything on that.

  • EBF here and he use to poop every diaper then every day now it's once a week or so and initially it was like a poop river but now it's pretty thick and raunch smelling. He seems happy other than teething so I assumed it was normal.
  • Huh. Maybe it is normal and the NP actually did know what he was talking about. :\"> But I know others are still enjoying the buttered popcorn baby poo, and I wish I still was too!

  • We were EBF but have started purees. Her poop is rancid. Ewwww. Makes DH proud lol
  • DS's poop is changing too. Not consistency, but now it ranges anywhere from bright yellow to almost brown, and it's pretty stinky. He's had a few bites here and there of solids, but this started happening before that. The pediatrician said the same thing -- changing gut! On days when he's straining and is really gassy, we so a probiotic and it helps a lot.

  • My LO has really smelly poop now, not cool- and yesterday she pooped like 4 times. We shall see what happens at DC today.
  • My LO went from seedy yellow poops after each feeding to runny, dark orange explosive poops every 1-2 days.

  • Same here - I would describe the consistency as melted chocolate bar....
  • Hmmm... Ours has gone the opposite direction the past few weeks and seems to have NO substance/solid (no seeds...) he's EBF and my diet hasn't changed.

Same here, I thought maybe diarrhea related to teething? It all soaks in the diaper just like pee, but it's a bright yellow.
Yeah! It soaks immediately into the diaper.  Liam's is usually a darker yellow/brown.  The other week (when I first noticed it) he was grunting A LOT trying to get it out, so I called the Dr.  The on call nurse said it sounds like he could be constipated, that there's something blocking and to try apple or pear juice.  We've been trying a little bit of juice for a few days and are seeing a little improvement (a couple seeds yesterday)...but still seems weird!
