so tired but can't nap because of my toddler

I know I can't be the only one that feels like this! I have a 20 month old toddler that has so much energy and I am so exhausted and worn out. I am 6 weeks 3 days according to my LMP. I just want sleep so bad but I can't. I am trying to just lay on the couch and rest but then he brings me toys or comes and crawls all over me. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my little boy, I am just so tired! Help! What do others do in this situation???

Re: so tired but can't nap because of my toddler

  • I don't know if your little dude naps, but I try to lay down and nap or read while my two-year-old naps in the afternoon. If he is awake, we are playing!

  • I try and take a nap while DD naps... When I was having DS I used to take DD to playgroups often so that she could play with her little friends and they could distract each other and I could just sit back and relax.

With DD I was babysitting a little boy her age (both 20mths at the time) during my first trimester so they were able to play together and I could sit down.

This time I have the 2 kids and there is no time to rest aside from nap times but DH looks after them if I am feeling sick on the weekends and at night so that really helps as well.

  • I'm with you! I have a 17 mo dd who is busy all the time and only naps about an hr a day all the sudden. I lay down when she does.
  • We are a pretty anti-tv family, but when I was pg with DD2, I would let DD1 watch a show on my bed and I would sort of curl around her and take a nap.  She was 19 months when DD2 was born, so I totally feel your pain! Do what you need to do to get some sleep!

  • Can you give them Benadryl ..... Or is that looked down on? :-)

I was joking just in case. I don't have little ones so no real advise. I do remember 16 yrs ago when I was preg with my second how exhausted I was. I worked full time too so no naps but I may or may not have changed the clocks and put up light canceling curtains so bed time had to be a little bit earlier and I went to bed too.

I did od one on Benadryl once but it was purely an accident.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • No advice for u. Just wanted to let u know your not the only one longing for sleep. I have a 12 month old DD who wakes up at 6:30 or 7 everyday and I'm 7.5 weeks. These days I would kill for 8am!!
  • I have a 3 year old and 19 month old and I used to use nap time to get things done, but now I nap when they nap. Literally as soon as I put them down I get right in bed. I hope for your sake your LO still naps.

  • I hear you.  My son is 19 months old and going through a sleep regression.  He's been waking up at random times during the night then for good at 5am.  My luck this happens right when I am in first tri!

  • I'm so glad I'm not alone! He does still nap but unfortunately it's usually when I have to go run an errand he passes out. That's what he did today. He had a dentist appt and slept on the way to that and on the way to my allergy appt. so no nap for me today :-/ maybe he will go to bed early. I work 3 days a week so I just have to make it through the next three days. But I might be napping on my lunch tomorrow!!! The thing that sucks my DH works hard and a lot so he's tired a lot too. And on the weekends when I say I want to nap he says yea me too. And I'm like Uhm no. Not with a mischievous toddler awake! I mean my mom left the room to go to the bathroom and he puts his car on the table and just climbs up there and to sit on it! I love this little ball of energy but man I want some of his energy!
  • @Pintobean39‌ the benadryl comment made me snort.
I do the same as PPs try to nap while LOs nap. DD will sit and watch a movie, but DS (15 months) could careless about TV. I really wish he would watch one in awhile.

  • I feel your pain! I work all day with children and then come home to my full of energy 18 month old. There is no rest for the weary! (Or the pukey!) I try to go outside with him as much as possible. He will keep himself entertained on his slide for the most part.

  • My 16 month old is BTTW all day long. When it's nap time for him, I have been zoning out and going online. I should be more constructive with that time but as we all know down time is very hard to come by.

  • I have an 11 year old and an about to be one year old. I nap whenever my little naps if it is possible. I try to go to sleep earlier than I am used to.  When DH has his 3 days off it is the best because I can nap whenever I want!

  • I feel your pain. I had a small meltdown over the weekend about how tired I am and how I can't keep up with him on most days. I turn on the TV when I need a break and take a moment to rest. I have also been letting him lay in bed with me for an hour in the evenings before bedtime on the days when I am really tired. I doubt this is a good habit to get into but I'm survival mode right now.

  • Nothing worse than feeling like you're about to pass out from exhaustion and not being able to take a quick cat nap. :-( The couch has become my best friend the last couple days and I'm thankful for any shut eye I can get.

  • I hear you. I have a 6 yr old son and 3 yr old daughter, and they are ALWAYS ready to play and full of energy! Normally-- I love it! I enjoy playing with the kids. But when I'm tired from pregnancy? Yeah...NO.

    What I do:
I tell them it's "quiet time", and we watch a family movie on the couch. I grab my pillow and blanket, and snuggle up to the kiddos and close my eyes to rest. I don't fully fall asleep, but I do feel better after laying there with my eyes shut.
