pumping prior to birth *edit*

edited September 2014 in October 2014 Moms
This was recommended to me as a way to kick start labor since I am dilated and contracting, but the contractions aren't getting close enough together has anyone done this? What was your experience with it?

**this is not something I am interested in doing it just sparked curiosity about the subject. Trust me I am not ready for baby to come just yet. Sorry for the confusion ladies.

  • Wait, you seriously want to do this at only 35 weeks pregnant????

I'm on mobile. Thank you for answering my question. Now I can say "no" with more authority.

  • Yeah try this at 42 weeks or something. I have heard it is effective but that would be dumb to start now.
  • Nipple stimulation can induce labor, but if you are not over 40 weeks, or there isn't a medical reason for inducing early, it is not advisable. Please tell us you're not trying to induce labor at 35 weeks!

  • Nipple stimulation can help labor progress.
  • Who recommended it?? It's normal to have some (light & irregular) contractions early on. At this point you WANT them to putter out and ease off.
  • No I don't want to try this at 35 weeks. I was just looking for people experience with it and if they did it and when. I wasn't considering it now it just sparked curiosity about the subject since I had never heard of it until a lactation nurse I know suggested it. I Don't think she realized I was only 35 weeks. @trisharenee0316‌ @SPurp13‌ sorry for the lack of clarification.

Your ticker says that you are 35w2d pregnant.

You should be doing everything in your power to STOP labor, despite being dilated and contracting.  (Unless your water has broken. In that case, consult your OB or the hospital staff).

I'm sorry you are having contractions, but your goal should be for them to NOT be productive at this point.

Now she says she isn't going to do it now (which I'm glad to hear), but the bit about the contractions not being close enough together makes me ponder...

  • @SPurp13‌ this is my second pregnancy o didn't do anything to spark labor the first time nor have I ever looked into it. It was just mentioned because i was dilated and contracting so I started wondering if people actually had done it. My wording was obviously horrible. I am sorry.

  • I've heard of nipple stimulation to induce labor.  It is a natural induction method.  I would only use it if at term or faced with the prospect of an induction or cesarean for some reason.

  • @trisharenee0316‌ and @famousea that makes sense now that you say that because when I started pumping for my son at 5 days post partum I remember getting cramping that felt like contractions.

  • I have heard and read that it can kick start labor. I personally haven't tried anything with either DD nor LO to kick start. Upon my readings it was women who still breastfeed Their DD/DS that can it can cause contractions early, and cause miscarriage or preterm labor. While a majority of these women had no problems with either it was something that CAN. Such as sex CAN apparently. I don't mess with shit until baby is here, and I understand you were curious.

Apologies for wording. Mobile bumping is not in my favors.

Nipple stimulation can also cause some pretty strong contractions that can be hard on baby.

    This is not really true.

  • Yeah.. Wait. I'm on bedrest till 37 weeks because of lots of uterine activity and progressing cervix. Nipple stimulation and prgasms are a big no no till later! I would say screw the pump and just do it yourself, or from your partner when the time comes.
  • I used a manual pump with DS at roughly 40wks. I got a few contractions but they stopped when I stopped for thr most part. I still had to be induced at 40w 5d
