roller coaster ride - update

This roller coaster ride has officially begun for me.

The first 28 weeks were really mellow like a kiddy ride at an amusement park.

And now that big scary ride starts.

Friday morning at 28w2d and 130am my water broke! It was really weird at first, I woke up from sleeping and thought I peed myself as it wasn't a ton of liquid. It happened a couple more times over the next hour and a half so at 3 I finally woke up K. We investigated, talked to her sister she is a midwife and decided since I wasn't in pain and there wasn't any blood that I would wait to call my Dr at 9am when the office opened.

I took my sweet time, showered, went into work for a few hours. Of course figuring it wasn't a big deal. Called the Dr at 9 and was told to come in right away. Oopsie!

Well, the verdict is that baby Amelia and I are here for the long haul. They have put me on antibiotics and given me steroids shots.

I was told that 25% of women usually go into labor within the first 48 hours. Then 75% of women usually go into labor within one week. If we can make it past the 1 week part then chances are we could last weeks in here. Heres hoping Amelia wants to cook for quite a few more weeks!!

Re: roller coaster ride - update

  • Oh no! That is how my premature birth began- 4am my water broke at 28 weeks. Totally unexpected and everything had been fine up till then. I hope Amelia can cook a little longer, every day inside counts big time! Especially if you can get a couple doses of the steroid shot. I delivered 4 hours after my water broke- I started contracting and dilated immediately. So I did not get the steroid shot and consequently our NICU stay was long. Since you did not go into labor, your chances are much better that everything will be okay! Get comfy in the hospital though, that is totally the place you need to be to maximize your outcome. I will be thinking very positive thoughts for you!!

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • Take care of yourself and Amelia.  Keep her cooking as long as you safely can.  This is a scary thing to be going through but you are at the safest place you can be.  I attached two websites on PPROM I found informative.

  • That sounds like a scary situation! But glad to hear she's staying in there for the time being! Here's hoping she stays put for awhile longer!
  • Wow, @rkbo -- so sorry to hear that things have gotten complicated!  I am glad you and Amelia are being well-cared for in the hospital and I'm hoping for the best outcome for both of you.  My cousin's wife's water broke around the same time as you and she was able to keep the baby in until 34 weeks -- I gather that is rare but I hope you are as lucky!  We'll be thinking of you.  Update us when you can.

  • A quick update, hope to fill in more later.

We are still here, Amelia is still cooking. I started bleeding last night and I immediately went into panic mode. The Dr on staff last night came in to do a quick ultrasound to find the position of the baby. She is still transverse, butt down, so she hasn't moved since Fridays ultrasound.

I have no idea what this bleeding means, I googled some last night but was having a hard time reading the bad stuff. I have found out that this condition or whatever you want to call it is called PROM.

We are anxiously waiting to see my ob this morning and see where we go from here. The nurse last night said it is common to bleed, but I just need more definitive answers. Where is this bleed coming from? Why bleed now and not 3 days ago? Where do we go from here?

The sitting and waiting is really hard.

@ball.and.chain do you know if your cousins wife would bleed while on bed rest?

Thank you all for your caring words, I am really trying to stay positive in here. Hoping for some good news from the Dr today. Will fill you all in later.

Unfortunately, no idea...but hopefully it is not a big deal!  I do have another friend who delivered at 27 or 28 weeks and her babies are now 1st graders, doing great!  So even though of course it would be great if you can make it to 34w, I feel confident that if you don't, Amelia will be well taken care of and will do great!  NICU stays are of course no picnic, but I'm just so grateful and amazed at what modern medicine can do for those teeny little babies.  Thinking of you a lot.

  • I just wanted to pop back in to let you know that I am still thinking of you. Thanks for the update today. I really hope that you see the Dr soon and that he/she has some reassuring news for you. I can't imagine what you must being thinking/feeling right now, but like everyone else has said the fact that you made it past 28 weeks before this happened is a very positive thing. I saw many, many teeny tiny bambinos while Will was in the NICU, and what they are able to do for them is just nothing short of amazing. The baby across the way from Will was a 23.5 weeker when she came in (which I didn't even know was possible, to be honest), and was breathing on her own at 5 weeks old (28 weeks gestational age) when we saw her. Anyway... I just wanted you to know that you all are in my thoughts.

  • Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear you are dealing with complications. I'm sure it is really scary. I hope Amelia stays put for a few more weeks for you. I'll be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way.

  • I'm keeping you in my thoughts. I hope the OB offers some more clarity. I agree with @ball.and.chain modern medicine is amazing. I hope Amelia stays safe and comfy inside, but if its her time I'm sure she will be well cared for.  Meanwhile I hope you are able to stay busy and comfy on bed rest.

  • Just reading your news. I'm so sorry this is now your new pregnancy story. I hope she can stay inside longer.
We went to the er at 33 weeks with contractions. It's really scary and unfortunately so little is out of our control. When I asked the dr if we had to deliver how bad would the outcome be, she responded with her being comfortable with any baby at 28 weeks. So while it's not ideal it could just mean longer NICU time.
I'll keep you in my thoughts.
  • I just saw your post and wish you good health and no excitement for many weeks.  I can't imagine how scary this must be.

Take care of yourself and your family, and try to take it one day at a time.

We will be thinking of you.
