Wiping off toys?

I can see me dusting these off and moving on at some point, but right now shes my first baby and this is driving me nutso! We are newly in the phase of "lets throw stuff out of my car seat" and it inevitably falls on a gross floor somewhere. What is everyone doing to clean toys and things that say "wipe with damp cloth".  That's not gonna kill the yucks from the floor at the car wash, ya know?

Re: Wiping off toys?

  • I 'wipe with a damp cloth' and don't worry about it.

  • I was just wondering this too- I honestly haven't cleaned her toys once.... Just this morning I finally remembered that I should wipe down her activity mat
  • I've only actually washed a small batch of her toys once, and it was stuff I brought to a kids concert that was grabbed by some neighboring babies and dragged through the dirt and chewed on by various mouths. Those things were legitimately scrubbed with soap!

In general, we either have things that are all plastic, all wood, or all cloth. The cloth stuff can just be tossed into the wash, which I do frequently since she sucks and chews on everything. Sometimes I give the plastic stuff a rinse off if it seems sticky or gunked up. I haven't really washed my wooden items much at all.
  • I'm with Lala, and I'm a FTM. Check for visible things and give back. There was actual dirt on her deer this morning and DH made me rinse it off, but that's about the max amount of cleaning it gets.
  • Ugh this just made me feel really bad for never cleaning her toys... Side question - how often do you all switch out/clean pacifiers? Since LO has the clip on 24/7 I'm embarrassed to even say how infrequently I do this!!
  • I'm in the wipe it off and give back camp 99% of the time. But yesterday we were walking a beach boardwalk where there are a million people and her toy and paci that got dropped on the floor of the pizza place got stuffed in the bag and washed before I gave it back. If we are home or out on a walk I give it right back though.

Cloth toys rarely get wiped or cleaned, same with activity may, unless they get spit up on or excessively drooled on.

I was the same way when I was a FTM.

  • I have things like pacifier wipes and some toy spray cleaner from Giggle, but I have yet to use the spray. I don't think it's necessary to be overzealous with disinfecting everything... exposure is good. Not that I want my kid licking elevator buttons or anything. Like others have said, there are some things that merit a wipe or clean from time to time.
  • I if they fall I usually give them back. Then about once a month I throw them in the dishwasher, quick and easy.

  • We're super lax about toy cleanliness. During cold & flu season, I'm a little more cognizant of wiping down things the baby might gnaw on that many other people have touched (ex: shopping cart handle), but if a toy falls on the ground, I usually just blow on it and hand it back.

  • Dishwasher of washing machine if I think it's really germy otherwise a rinse ir wipe ought to do.

  • I don't even wipe with a damp cloth. I might briefly inspect for visible stuff, but that's it. And I did it the same way as a ftm.

  • Wipe on my clothes and give back unless the dog gets a hold of something, then it gets washed.
  • I don't wash toys often either. I usually just hand it right back. She dropped a stuffed animal in the mud the other day and I threw it in the wash but that's about as good as it gets around here.

  • Same as others check for hair (usually mine some day this shedding will have to stop right?!) and hand back.
  • Same as Lala. I just kind of Shake it off and then hand it back. Sometimes I don't even do that.

  • If we are somewhere like a restaurant or the mall I will wipe it off with a Wet Ones wipe. I figure that it will get at least some of the germs and it won't hurt them to get a little in their mouth. If it was someone's house I would just give it back to them. I pretty much never wash stuff other than that, unless it falls in a public bathroom or something. Then I'd sterilize that sucker!

  • We don't clean toys unless its a public restroom or it visibly lands in dog poop (yes, that happened with DS1).  I think I boiled DS1s binky twice?  DS2- never. He has the same bink they gave him on discharge day at the NICU.  Its clipped to him 24/7, so its not like it ever hits the floor.

Her pacifier has been cleaned 3 times ever. Once I sanitized it, the other two I just washed it with soap and water. We got the pacifier to see if it would help her in the car (she HATED her car seat). I gave it to her immediately in the parking lot without washing it. Totally worked
  • If it is a hard toy you can use Clorox Anywhere spray.  They say that it is safe for a baby and I know a few friends who swear by it!
