Pumping at the hospital?

I didn't think about this last time but should I start pumping at the hospital? I am going to have an RCS. Last time it didn't occur to me to start pumping until my milk came in but I've been reading a lot of people start pumping right away. Is this even feasible since I will probably be breastfeeding every 2 hours??
Any advice/ past experience is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Pumping at the hospital?

  • You would only need to pump at the hospital if you are separated from your baby for a long period of time (like if they are in the NICU for some reason - hopefully not!) If your baby is with you after recovery and during the rest of your hospital stay you will just start breastfeeding your baby - no need to pump.

If you are separate from your baby you will need to hand express some colosterum and then pump every 2-3 hours to help signal your body to start producing milk.

  • Agreed with PPs. If baby can latch, and isn't separated from you for a medical reason, just nurse! (Trust me, you don't want to deal with pumping at the beginning unless there's a really good reason).
