Schedule v sleeping baby

My LO was in the NICU his first two weeks and was on a feeding schedule of pumped BM every 3 hours. I have tried to maintain that schedule since coming home. However, I have noticed that he is deeply asleep when I get up to feed him. I have to wake him up and he never eats quite as much as he needs to during these feedings. Should I just let him sleep and maintain my every 3 hour pumping schedule and allow him to let me know when he needs food? I don't want him to get too hunrgy.

Re: Schedule v sleeping baby

  • My little guy is 7 weeks and still doesn't feed as long at night as he does in the daytime.

  • Agreed with PPs. I had to make DD eat *at least* every 3 hours for the first month (we had to get to 6lbs before I could let her sleep), but if your pedi is OK with his weight gain, they may have you switch to feeding on demand (which for us still turned out to be about every 2 hours during the day, and every 3-4 at night), which you'll probably get to eventually. In the meantime, don't hesitate to feed him more frequently than every 3 hours if he's awake and interested - it'll stimulate supply, and keep his weight gain strong.
