If you've had mastitis, questions for you...

Last Tuesday i noticed i was very tired, but thought nothing of it.  My right nipple was sore, I figured we had a bad latch. Wed I had a bad headache and more tiredness...that night i noticed red streaking from my boob.  The next day I woke up feeling terrible with the chills and flu like symptoms.  I already had an appt at my MW for a different issue. She said even though it was not hard to start the antibiotics. the right side was also tender to the touch.  Starting Thurs I nursed or pumped every 2 hrs along massage, heat and dangle nursing, just in case there was a clog i couldnt feel.  In fact i thought I found a very small one, but I'm really not sure.  Yesterday started nursing every 3 hrs and doing the same today. However breast is still sore to the touch. Nipple is now even more sore from all the nursing and pumping.  The right side of my breast is actually red from all the massaging ive done.  I started to get shooting pains today, worried I may be getting yeast.  how long were your breasts sore if you had mastitis? Should i give a call to the MW again?  Any advice for me?

  • The sudden shooting pain was not when I was nursing, although now that I am nursing again I had some pain shooting toward my armpit. I have been on the Antibiotics since Thursday night. Since I started I have been taking some sort of supplement that prevents the overgrowth of yeast. Yesterday I started taking regular probiotics.

  • Is it possible that you are experiencing pump trauma? I have been EP'ing and was experiencing shooting pain in my left breast after a lot of extra pumping from a plugged duct. Went to the doctor and she said it wasn't thrush (both nipples hurt as well) but probably pump trauma. I tried nursing my son two days ago and we were actually successful so I haven't pumped in a couple days. The breast no longer hurts so I think she was right. </blockquote

I.don't think so. There is a specific spot on my breast that if I touch sends terrible pain throughout the breast and it is more sore than last week. I think there it's a clogged duct that is not accessible to me. I have done so much massaging it's ridiculous.

  • Nothing wrong with calling the MW, though it does sounds like mastitis. I was producing so much milk when my daughter was first born, I had mastitis TWICE within 2 months! Both times had flu-like symptoms ten redness + tenderness.
The first time I was scared my stitches were infected because of the chills & body aches. Went to the dr & the nurse asked about the redness on my breast which I hadn't even noticed til then. The second time I had the symptoms & knew to look for the redness so I went back & they gave me stronger antibiotics.
She also said breast feeding & pumping were good to help get that milk out since I'd likely gotten it from too much backed up milk
