mastitis question - updated

I thought clogged ducts and mastitis was something you got early after baby was born, but I've got a painful lump in one breast and spiked a low fever overnight and felt pretty miserable. Tylenol brought the fever down but my temp's going back up again now that it's wearing off, and I'm still definitely painful.

I know I should just call my doctor, but I'm hoping (denial anyone?) it's nothing. I was wondering if anyone who had been diagnosed with mastitis could comment on your experience, particularly how it started. I'm not super sick right now, but I wonder if I can do a wait-and-see or if I should address it before it gets worse.

Update: Thanks for the advice! The doctor's office couldn't get me in until Wednesday PM. However, I emailed the doctor directly and he rx'd antibiotics without seeing me. Not super ideal, but at least I can start the meds. My symptoms at this point are super obvious for mastitis--redness over a painful hot lump and fever.

Re: mastitis question - updated

  • Same as @SeeJayEmm, I had the rash and pain along with the flu-like symptoms. Nursing on that side was sharp and painful. My doctor did a manual exam to check for any lumps/abscess and then put me on antibiotics. Even a gentle manual exam nearly brought me to tears. I felt relief within 3 hours of the first dose and was able to nurse without any pain after 8 hours.

  • No lump, but lots of pain. I only had it happen once (with my son), but it was around at 6-7 months old. Misery, fever, chills, sooooo painful to nurse. After I started antibiotics, I was substantially better within 4-5 hours, and then totally better within 24 hours.

Try to just grit your teeth and let your daughter keep nursing. It will help dissipate te infection. Or you can pump--if you don't like the idea of your daughter ingesting it (even though it won't hurt her). Either way, lots of fluids, lots of suction on that breast. And for sure immediate antibiotics so that you don't get an access that requires surgical drainage.
  • It is concerning that you are having fevers with pain. You most likely need antibiotics. Just go get it checked out yo. You know what the right answer is, you're a vet.

  • Call your doc if you haven't already.  In the meantime, I had a plugged duct (hard lump, reddened area but no fever) and the advice nurse told me get in the hot shower & run hot water over it, massage it & hand express (hurt like a mofo) and pump and nurse.  Also, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  You can get it at anytime, not just in the beginning.  Please don't take this for advice to avoid the doctor, just what to do while you waif for the doc to call back.  You have a fever and that is concerning.  The earlier you get antibiotics, the more likely you will be able to manage it with oral antibiotics and not IV (i.e. hospitalization).   You can get really sick if it's mastitis and you don't get proper treatment.  Feel better!
