Cloth Diapering

Super heavy wetter

Hi ladies, i've been lurking on this board for months in anticipation of my little one being here and in CD. I sewed his entire NB stash of pocket diapers and so far so good except for one thing. He is a crazy heavy wetter. He pees through disposables at the same rate, so I know its not that I messed up the diapers (at least I'm 80% sure of that). He can only go about 2 hours so far and I have a variety of inserts in bamboo and hemp in carrying levels of heaviness.  I *just* sewed up a new set of super heavy bamboo and am hoping this helps but any other words of advice?

How on earth will he get through a night of sleeping?? Last night he slept 3 - 3.5 hours (most ever in one stretch) and he had peed through his disposables on 2 of those changes.  I have him in spouses at night because i had to double all the inserts so I don't have enough to go the full day and night. (also, his other mom is horrified by cloth so far and is only tolerating it but not yet on board)

    1. two hours is a totally normal amount of time to be in a diaper, especially at that age. Baby should be changed every 1.5-2 hrs. That doesn't sound like your baby is necessarily such a super heavy wetter, just normal.

    2. pocket diapers are generally not the best option for nighttime, especially if you think he could be a super heavy wetter.. A snappi'd prefold with a doubler, or a good fitted is a much better option. Bamboo+ hemp should help you out, but as he begins to sleep longer stretches, I would look into something besides pockets.

  • Agree with PPs. We used fitteds at night as DS got older. With the fleece soaker diaper covers I sewed. The fleece is a breathable water resistant layer (it is not water proof, but does keep the moisture from leaking out). We liked this solution because it was a breathable solution. DS was getting horrible rashes from sitting in pockets overnight. Once we switched to non-PUL diapers for night, the rashes went away. GL

Yup. DS is Tommy Pickles! Nothing like living with an escape artist.
Just another cloth diapering, baby wearing mama.

  • The amount and timing of pee that happens as a baby begins to STTN and for longer stretches will change. So don't worry about having to change at the same frequency as during the current phase that you are in. You will probably want something more absorbent as baby gets into those longer sleep cycles.

Sounds like you've got the sewing skills, maybe you can DIY ON fitteds!
