Nwmr looking for decent relatively inexpensive photo editing software

I use a Mac and find it odd that iPhoto has less easy editing options than things I can do on my phone with free or .99 cent apps... I am not skilled w the fine tuning or
photography and would love to get some software for my computer that will allow me to easily do some fun things w photos from my regular camera. Any recs?

Re: Nwmr looking for decent relatively inexpensive photo editing software

  • Iphoto is meant to be more than an app that is why it is harder because it allows the user more control. I always recommend iphoto for someone looking for software a little above what is offered on Windows machines but not Photoshop. Apple has some great training classes on their software.  It is going to be hard to find something easy because photo editing, if done manually, is not easy.  The software that came with my camera is fairly basic and easy to use but does not allow me to have the control I want over my images. I shoot with a DSLR using a manual setting. Photoshop elements is nice but does take some time to learn.  You can preload “actions” which will automatically edit the photo, but you have to create the action or purchase it online.  The reality of photo editing it’s not one size fits all.  Sometimes the lighting is off, sometimes you want to remove something from the photo etc… Most of the fun mindless (I don’t mean anything negative by calling it mindless just meaning that the person needs little knowledge about photo editing) photo editing is done through  apps.  Really their target audience is the everyday person who knows little and wants to know little about taking a picture, editing it etc… If you have a tablet it is fairly easy to upload photos and edit them on the tablet. Otherwise I recommend learning iphoto as it is a great entry-level editing and organizing program.

  • We have a program called the Gimp on our home computer (not a Mac).  It's free and has a lot of the same capabilities as Photoshop, which means you'll need some time or know-how to use it for photo editing.  I'm not sure what open source programs like the Gimp are available on Macs.  MH uses a different open source (free) program for editing raw photo files, but he gets pretty into photography and photo editing and much of what he does with editing levels & color curve stuff is above my head.

Have you tried uploading photos to a program online & playing with what they have available for "fun" editing?  I think sites like Photobucket sometimes have editing capabilities for the photos you store on them if you're just interested in playing around with making photos black & white or other fun effects.

Thanks all! I just would like to be able to do things like apply those "fun" color editing things they have in some mobile apps (eg Polaroid etc) and also just to remove a flyaway hair or soemthing without making the space where it was just a blur... I have tried w a small circle in the part of iPhoto for retouch but it still blurs it. I don't mind mindless that is what I am looking for ;)
  • You can get Adobe photo shop and light room for only $9.99 a month. Spot removal, etc is really easy to do and if you have the time it can be fun to learn all the stuff you can do with it
