Clothes to wash for baby's arrival?

So, as you all know BabyNacho is measuring big.  I'm trying to figure out what I should have washed and ready so that I don't have to do a lot of laundry the first day or two when i get home.

Right now, baby is measuring 6.5 pounds and the OB is pretty much guaranteeing delivery at 37 weeks.  (Holy-shit-that's-like-tomorrow).  OB estimates that based on the current growth trend, baby will be about 8.5 pounds by then.  :-/

Any thoughts or advice?  I don't want to have too much newborn stuff ready if it won't fit but at the same time, i want to make sure I have enough so I'm not scrambling.

I'm probably thinking about this way too much.

  • i know a lot of babies that were 8-9 lbs at birth and still managed to wear NB size for at least a few days. i wouldn't keep too much NB on hand, just a few pieces. i would wash NB & 0-3 before arrival.

  • Wash all newborn - 3 month stuff (that includes the 0-3 month stuff) right away. You should be good after that!
  • Ds was 8.2lbs , i didnt even get any nb stuff cuz i thought hed be too big. I dont remember them estimating a size but i was wrong and had to buy nb stuff. Lol . He was actually in them for a while. Id still do all 0-3 mth stuff and a few nb. Its not too bad to have someone throw a load in and the other stuff will just be a bit too big. Not like you leave the house the first week or 2 anyway ;)
  • We are washing basically all the stuff just because its mostly hand me down stuff so it doesn't matter for exchanging purposes.

We will have to buy some footie sleepers and some pants to fill in the gaps otherwise we are all set. I plan to buy an even amount of each but won't wash till after she is born (when DS was born we came home to a deep cleaned house from top to bottom even though we had cleaned it 2 days before DS was born, thanks parents and fil so I don't expect having a load of laundry to throw in being an issue)

My DS was 7lbs even when born. He was in NB for over a month. I think it depends one babies length as much as weight. He was only 19ins and 0-3 month stuff swollowed him. We are expecting DD to follow suit and be on the smaller side as she has been consistently measuring about a week and a half behind throughout the whole pregnancy

  • My biggest was 8lbs 1oz and she fit NB sizes just fine. At least with mine, it was more an issue of length rather than weight. All 3 of mine outgrew things lengthwise well before they were too tight.

I plan to wash all NB and 0-3mo sized stuff. Worst case scenario, I can always have Dh wash something before we come home.

  • @Maelara That's exactly our plan!  @missnacholover unsure your financial situation and if you could use the help in exchanging unused newborns for larger sizes, but we decided that we will wish all newborn and 3m stuff we have and then just donate whatever we don't need/use.

  • Am I the only one who has washed and sorted everything already? I have a lot of second hand stuff and hand me downs as well as a few new things that I've picked up here and there. I've washed it all!

I only have a few newborn sized things and really only a few 0-3 month as well. I seem to have a ton of 3-6 month things.
  • I just washed all of my newborn and 3-6 months things.  Then I folded them.  It is only now that I realize the ridiculous amount of newborn clothes we have.  A lot were gifts, but man!  My husband says we'll just change her outfit every diaper change.  Maybe...  :)

  • @AnnieRoo13‌ all of Avery's nb-3m stuff is wash and put away (as much away as it can be right now). I also washed all the burp clothes, receiving blankets, blankets and swaddle blankets. I'm going hard core on this nesting this right now, lol!
  • Thanks all!  I went to BBB yesterday and got some stuff on clearance in NB size (onesies, t-shirts) that if I wash and they only get worn once or don't get worn at all, it won't be a huge loss of $$.  AND I got some of those gown things that I think we'll use a lot when we get home - easy diaper changing!  I feel better about things.

I mean, worse comes to worse, DH or I will have to do laundry.  Not the end of the world.  I just want to be as prepared as possible - one less thing to worry about is good in my book!

  • All of our NB to 3 month is washed and put away. I don't have a ton of newborn and didn't last time either. I had to go buy more because DD was only 6 pounds, 4 ounces, 18 inches long. She was in NB a lot longer than what everyone said she would be. Before she was born, they estimated she would be over 7 pounds, so they can definitely be off. I would wash all 0 - 3 and a few NB to start off. If you need more NB, laundry is no big deal.
  • I picked up LOs coming home outfit over the weekend. I was going to get it in the 3 months size from Carter's because NB just looked so small. I had a friend with me who said that I'm going to be surprised at how small he is. I wanted to wash it when I washed everything else this weekend but I'm scared he's going to be too big. 2 weeks ago the dr said he's measuring 2 weeks ahead (and was already almost 4 pounds) which would put me on the course to have about a 9 pound baby. But, as we all know, those measurements can be off. Ahhh...so confusing lol

  • @LongIslandMama1114‌ I agree-- super confusing not knowing what to anticipate! I even picked up a 2 pack of preemie sleepers (weeks ago when i feared going into PTL & ending up with a really little guy) but I haven't washed them. Figure i'd hang on to them till his weight is estimated well past that 5lb stage and then I'd return them. Talk about tiny! I do have a NB and 0-3 outfit packed in our hospital bag though, just so we have options depending on his size & then we'll wash extra NB stuff if needed once home.

  • @MrsG1019 That's a good idea. My friend said we'll wait and see what he weighs when he's born. If he's over the 8 pounds of the NB high end, she'll exchange it for a bigger size then go to my place and wash it. If he's not, she'll wash it and bring it up to me before we're released. But, the thought of not having everything ready and in the hospital bag makes me antsy lol

For now, I'll just go to my weekly appointments and monitor his weight gain and take it from there. But I did get a really cute 3m outfit at my shower over the weekend that is already washed so maybe I'll bring that one just in case.

  • I was told that I would likely be delivering closer to Oct 18th due to Lil Dude measuring 3 weeks ahead at EVERY apt. My mom pointed our that she delivered a whopping 11 lb brother for me so it's possible that this guy is just going to be huge.

That being said, I've washed every last item of clothing I've received (Minus preemie clothes an aunt got me since he's supposedly already over that hump). I'm crazy though and have been nesting hardcore. Most of the nb clothes I have are hand me downs so I'm not to worried if he never wears them.

  • At 32 week appt baby was measuring at 5lbs! They said if she keeps up at that rate I'm looking at 8.5lbs.  I didn't receive much NB stuff, but I've already washed all my NB and 3 month stuff.  I'd rather have one less thing to do when baby is here.  I'll probably start on 6 mo stuff shortly.
